Ajouter au panierTrade Paperback. Etat : Very Good. First Atheneum Edition. 553 Pages Indexed. The purpose of this book is to explain the manner in which the strategy of modern war has developed, in the conviction that a knowledge of the best military thought will enable readers to comprehend the causes of war and the fundamental principles whic…h govern its conduct. The editors believe that eternal vigilance in such matters is the price of liberty and if there is to be a durable peace there must be a clear understanding of the role which armed force plays in international society. In chapter 2 is shown that the greatest military historians of our time have felt a need to apologize for their interest in military problems because dislike for war and ignorance concerning its role in human affairs have led peaceful peoples everywhere to deprecate its significance in history and ignore its portentous meaning for our future. For it is not force, in itself, which is wrong but the purposes to which force is sometimes put. As Pascal said almost three centuries ago, we must realize that: Justice without force is impotent. Force without justice tyrannical. The American nation is the foremost military power of modern times. The manner in which we use this great power is momentous for ourselves and for the world. Contents in Five parts: The Origins of Modern War From the 16th Century to the 18th Century, The Classics of the 19th Century Interpreters of Napoleon, Form the 19th Century to the First World War, From the First to the Second World War, and Sea and Air War.

The magazine is known for its extensive use of dramatic photographs. The magazine is published monthly, and additional map supplements are also included with subscriptions. On occasion, special editions of the magazine are issued. The first issue of National Geographic Magazine was published on September 22, 1888, nine months after the Society was founded. Starting with its January 1905 publication of several full-page pictures of Tibet in 1900-1901, the magazine changed from being a text-oriented publication closer to a scientific journal to featuring extensive pictorial content, and became well known for this style. Includes the index to Volume XIX, for 1908.This issue includes In Quaint, Curious Croatia by Felix J. Koch (with 35 illustrations), and Some Ruined Cities of Asia Minor by Ernest L. Harris (with 19 illustrations), and Our Neglected Southern Coast A Cruise of the Carnegie Institution Yacht "Physalia", by Alfred Goldsborough (with 10 illustrations)., and Where Everybody Dresses in White (with 10 illustrations), and The Production of Whalebone (illustrated). Felix Koch was a reporter, writer, and photographer, best known for his articles on topics of historical interest and his reporting on national and international news events. Koch became a well-known freelance writer and photographer, contributing articles illustrated with his own photographs, to newspapers and magazines. He covered many of the major stories of his time including the assassination of President William McKinley, the coronation of King George V of England, the "Scopes Monkey Trial" and the Mexican Revolution. Felix Koch took many photographs during World War I including photography work for the U.S. Government. Ernest Lloyd Harris was an American diplomat who was stations in Siberia and was best known for activities relating to the Russian Civil War in Siberia, the Czechoslovak Legion, political and economic conditions in Siberia, and American policy in Siberia.Alfred G. Mayer (Alfred Goldsborough Mayor; April 16, 1868 - June 24, 1922) was an American marine biologist and zoologist of German descent whose fascination with Medusae (Jellyfish) marked a turning point for Biology. After many years of physics-related work in several Universities, he left his position to pursue a career in Natural History. His most recognized work originated from his work as a successful Marine Biologist. He published his first book about Jellyfish in 1910 titled Medusae of the World, which documented his many studies of species of jellyfish around the world. He was Director of the Department of Marine Biology of the Carnegie Institution of Washington at the time this article was written. Presumed First Edition/First Printing thus. Felix J. Koch (Photographer), Alfred Goldsborough (illustrateur).
