Softbound. Etat : New. Etat de la jaquette : n/a. First Edition. Artist, poet, writer and cartoonist Feng Zikai is one of the most beloved figures to emerge from the 'New Art Movement' of the early 20th century. As a founding member and catalyst of the movement, he helped Chinese art merge the traditional divisions of classical, elitist scholars' works and naive folk art into a new fusion that had both aesthetic and mass appeal. His cartoons were an immensely popular medium through which Feng commented on the political and social changes occurring during this turbulent period in China's modern history. Sadly, later in life when the communists came to power, Feng paid a high price for his outspoken honesty and satire. Feng is not nearly as well known or appreciated in the Western world as his stature and accomplishments in China might lead one to expect. Foreword and essay by the artist in Chinese and English. Remaining text in Chinese (the drawings, though, speak for themselves). Book consists of folded sheets string bound at the spine in the traditional Chinese style - a beautifully produced volume. 234 pp., 100 cartoons illustrated in b&w. Size: 26 x 15 cm. Feng Zikai (illustrateur).…

He lived through much of the political and socio-economic turmoil that arose during the birth of Modern China. Much of his literary and artistic work comments on and records the relationship between the changing political landscape and the daily lives of ordinary people. He was a contemporary painter and was taught by the accomplished painter, Li Shutong. . In 1954, Feng Zikai was invited into the public scene, being granted prominent positions within the art and literary circles. He was offered membership on the Standing Committee of the national Chinese Artists' Association and vice presidency of the regional Shanghai branch. He also helped run various high schools in Shanghai and enjoyed social prominence during the 'Hundred Flowers' period. . In the 1960s, he was elected to be the president of the Shanghai Chinese Painting Institute as well as the Chairman of the Shanghai Artist's Association.
