Gilt-lettered labels in the second and fourth panels, the others display a gilt-stamped device depicting a Napoleonic Imperial Eagle with crown. Minor wear and rubbing, but sound and still handsome binding, entirely appropriate for an official volume issued under the imprint of the official printer of the Prà fecture du Dà partement du Mont-Tonnerre. OCLC 313509817 Our rare book is one of the few concrete reminders of that brief and unusual period of French power having extended itself deep into the German-speaking lands. We can find no records of any copy in the New World except the full three volume set now at Yale [This Yale set bears bookplates stating "Association of the Bar of the City of New York: From the library of Konrad von Maurer, professor at the University of Munich . 1904." see OCLC # 748581316]. We have the first volume only, of the three. The two volumes which eventually followed were issued by a different publisher. The second volume bears the notation on the German title page: "2. Bis zum 11ten August 1809" ; the third and final volume reads: "3. Bis zum 8ten Oktober 1811." These later two volumes were printed in Mainz by Florian Kupferberg. Our undated first volume was printed by C.F. Pfeiffer, who states that he was "imprimeur de Prà fecture" /[on the German title page; "Prefektur=Buchdrukker"] The listings in OCLC (as well as an example available on Google Play) indicate that there was an issue of this first volume under Florian Kupferberg's imprint, with the date on the title page(s) specified as "1810." Our issue with the imprint of C. F. Pfeiffer as "inprimeur de Prà fecture" appears to be significantly rarer. Only two of the locations cited in OCLC matches the details of our copy [one at Landesbibliothekszentrum Rheinland-Pfalz / Pfälzische Landesbibliothek, Otto-Mayer-Str. 9, Speyer, 67346, Germany -- OCLC #1072396243; the other at Wissenschaftliche Stadtbibliothek, Rheinallee 3 B, Mainz, 55116, Germany -- OCLC #174295977]. This volume, the first and most important part of a publication which eventually was extended to three volumes during the following years 1810-12, is direct evidence of the final extention of Napoleonic power and law into the German speaking regions, right up to the banks of the Rhine in Mainz (the French called that city Mayence). This city was the birthplace of printing from metal type, and formed the seat of a thousand years of complex relations with the Franks and their French succesors. In 1792, at the time of the French Revolution the French Revolutionary army occupied Mayence. In and around the city, the Jacobins of Mainz had proclaimed one of the most unusual by-products of the French Revolution -- the "Republic of Mainz" -- the first democratic state in the territory that now constitutes Germany. This unlikely entity was short-lived; after an 18-week siege laid by Prussian troops, the French troops holding Mainz surrendered in July, 1793. This conclusion was punctuated by the so-called Battle of Mainz in 1795 in which forces of the First French Republic were defeated by the armies of the Habsburg monarchy. This same short spell of years in France had seen even more chaotic times for the original Jacobins. One of the few major figures among the organizers of the French Revolution to survive these tumultuous years was the owner of the name cited on the title page of this book as the main authority of what had by then came to be known as the French Empire: Jeanbon St. Andrà . This man, having been born to Protestant parents in 1749, became accustomed to swimming against the tide of politics and power. Despite his education by the Jesuits in Marseille, he was forbidden by Royal decree as a protestant to pursue his initial choice of a career devoted to the law. At sixteen, Saint-Andrà instead enlisted in the French Merchant Marine. In a very few years, he rose to become a Captain. But his loss of three ships led to the evaporation of his financial backing and soured him on naval life -- for a time. He studied theology in Geneva and became a prominent pastor in Southern France. After the publication of an influential tract published in pamphlet form concerning the politial organization of French protestants, it was clear that Jeanbon St. Andrà would play a significant role in the complex politics of the Revolutionary period. He became a founder of the Socià tà des amis de la Constitution -- [which quickly became known under the pithier name: Club des Jacobins -- (or, "Socià tà des Jacobins, amis de la libertà et de l'à galità "). On the second of November in 1792 Saint-Andrà was elected president of the Jacobins. Shortly before this, Saint-Andrà became a Deputy in the National Convention; he eventually became the Twenty-second President of this powerful assembly. In June of 1793, when his Jacobins gained control of the assembly, Saint-Andrà became a member of the crucially powerful Committee of Public Safety. Soon afterwards, he proposed a fellow Jacobin, Maximilien Robespierre, for membership. It seems significant of Saint-Andrà 's central position in the rapidly shifting waves of power roiling Revolutionary France that it fell to him as President of the National Convention to formally announce the death of Marat. He was succeded in the Presidency by George Danton. There are many other details which might demonstrate that Saint-Andrà stood shoulder-to-shoulder with many fellow politicians whose names would become famous, or infamous among the radicals. His radical credentials are beyond question; he supported the execution of King Louis XVI, and also opposed the punishment of the leaders of the September Massacres [who, during five astoundingly bloody days at the beginning of that month in 1793, roused the populace to demand the execution of ove.…
