Paperback. Etat : New. Print on Demand. This book explores the dramatic arts in the Netherlands from their genesis to the latter half of the 17th century. It is not simply a listing of players and dates but posits several important ideas that shape the thesis. First, the author argues that the Dutch theatre developed somewhat independently of its European counterparts, due to the influence of the unique Dutch culture and social milieu. Second, the author traces the evolution of Dutch drama from religious mystery plays through a period of moralizing didacticism to true secular drama. Finally, the author explores the emergence of the uniquely Dutch theatrical phenomenon of the Rederijkers, literary societies or guilds that wrote and staged plays. The author also discusses in depth major influences on Dutch theatre including the works of Shakespeare and French dramatists, as well as the impact of English touring companies on the development of the art form in the Netherlands. By exploring the history of Dutch theatre from its roots to its early golden age, this book offers insights into the relationship between theatre and society and the role that theatre plays in expressing national identity. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.…
