A century later, Fort Caswell was built on Oak Island and used for Confederate defense. Two of North Carolina's historic lighthouses…grace the beaches of the area. "Old Baldy" was built in 1817 in a unique octagonal shape. On Oak Island, the lighthouse is modern yet beautiful; it was completed in 1958. River steamer routes flowed through here until 1925, exporting and importing goods at the Wilmington port. Small farms across the State of New York still struggle to survive but as one drives across the rural areas we are often rewarded with incredible examples of scenic farmsteads and th…eir infrastructure. I am very pleased to offer a real testament to that waning era, titled: Barns of the Genesee Country, 1790-1915 by Daniel Fink. This very large and heavy hard cover book (9 x 11 ¼ x 2 inches, 528 pages) was published by James Brunner, Publisher of Geneseo, New York, dated 1988 and the Second Printing of the First Edition. The author- Daniel Fink- photographer and historian gives us a lively and authoritative study that illuminates the social, economic and architectural history of these barns using contemporary records and original photographs. The book is amply illustrated throughout with both color and black-and-white photographs. Condition: This book is in very good condition. The double edge folded dust jacket is almost pristine with just a tiny tear out of the leading edge and still bright and glossy. So too the burgundy cloth boards. Inside the former owners have left their name and address on the first blank page but this is the only mark I found in the book. It is clean and bright throughout without toning or foxing. Both hinges are intact, and the binding is tight and sound. This book is not ex-library or a remainder.

Here too is Charles Williamson, who enticed prospective settlers in 1793 with a horse race boasting a first prize of 1000 pounds; Ebenezer "Indian" Allan, who was given the future site of Rochester, New York, on condition he build a grist mill and sawmill on the land; and Jared Boughton, who carried his 1789 wheat harvest on his back to Allan's grist mill, four miles from the nearest road. Throughout the nineteenth century, as the first scattered settlements evolved into prosperous farming communities, expanding markets and increasing mechanization created a continuing need for larger, more efficient and more versatile barns. This dynamic evolution is placed in context with vivid accounts of life in the Genesee Country, including the advent of the railroads and Erie Canal, the rise of dairying and collapse of wheat, and the often litigious beginnings of farm implement manufacture. The book is generously supplemented with contemporary woodcuts, advertisements, first-hand accounts and diaries. The author restored several rare prints, some almost entirely faded, and has made new prints from original glass negatives. Among the many period images is a remarkable series of photographs documenting the relocation of a barn near Lyons, New York. Daniel Fink's scholarship and artistry combine in a major contribution to the architectural history of the ten-county region flanking the Genesee River. As the area's barns continue to disappear, this original and beautiful book will prove increasingly valuable as a record of our heritage.
