Hardcover. Etat : As New. Limited Edition. This a truly outstanding heirloom quality edition of one of the greatest books of the last century. It has a substantial binding in full leather, and was an exclusive Limited Edition in 1978 for the subscribers to the 'GREATEST BOOKS OF THE TWENTIETH CENTURY' series from this distinguished and much collected publisher. Now scarce and getting scarcer, these wonderful books had a specific purpose. They were intended as ultimate editions of those books considered to be worthy of serious collectors. This one is typical of the attention of detail. It is printed on acid free paper; the three text edges are gilded, so dust cannot penetrate; the sections are properly sewn, not glued. Superlative and beautiful, these editions are now predictably most sought after. Language: eng Language: eng 0.0 Language: eng 0.0 Language: eng 0.0 Language: eng.

Full leather. Etat : Near fine. First edition of The Posthumous Papers of The Pickwick Club by Charles Dickens, in a stunning Cosway-Style Binding. (illustrateur). First Edition, Second State. Doublures with inlaid red morocco and gilt dentelles. Inset hand-colored portrait of Dickens after paintings by Daniel Maclise, under glass with brass frame, in front doublure. This work is the second issue of the text, with the half-title, the corrected "W" in Weller on the vignette title, "loud knocking" on page 18 is slightly mutilated, signature "E" present on pages 25 and 27, and pagination present for page 26. Solid text block, light wear to edges of some leaves, faint foxing. Complete with vignette title page, frontispiece portrait and 41 illustrated plates by Robert Seymour and H.K. Brown ("Phiz"). (Smith I, 3) (Hatton & Cleaver 3-88pp) A beautiful Cosway-Style binding. The Cosway-style binding originated in London in the early 20th Century, created by bookseller and Dickens scholar, John Harrison Stonehouse. The style was named after Richard Cosway (1742-1821), the celebrated English miniaturist painter, known for his delicate portrait work. Stonehouse commissioned Sangorski & Sutcliffe to create bindings that incorporated miniature watercolor portraits set into the covers under glass. These miniatures-painted on ivory by artists such as Miss C.B. Currie-were often portraits of the book's author, a key character, or a historical figure related to the text. Each was framed within the leather cover, usually of richly gilt morocco, and accompanied by elaborate tooling and jeweled ornamentation. The style became a hallmark of Edwardian luxury bookbinding. After the deaths of Sangorski (1912) and later Currie, the tradition continued under Sutcliffe and later firms, and "Cosway-style" came to denote any binding featuring such inset miniatures, even when produced elsewhere.

Octavo, [two volumes], 388pp; 406pp. Three-quarter navy blue morocco, light blue cloth boards, gilt ruling to covers. Title in gilt on spine, five raised bands with gilt-ruled compartments. Solid text block, faint foxing to title page, not affecting text, a touch of rubbing to joints. Volume I with frontispiece and tissue. Both volumes have original cloth spines preserved on rear flyleaves and bookplates of Thomas W. Lawson on verso of front free endpapers. Senior Chaplain of the U.S. Navy Fitch W. Taylor (1803-1865) was first a minister for the Protestant Episcopal Church in the Diocese of Maryland. During his twenty-four years of service in the U.S. Navy, Taylor circumnavigated the globe aboard the USS Columbia, one of the first U.S. naval ships to make such a voyage. The Flagship details his experiences aboard this vessel. The bookplates in these volumes belonged to Thomas W. Lawson (1857-1925), a controversial Boston businessman who promoted and manipulated stocks, primarily in the copper market.
