Written in the same month as Britain and France had declared war, the letter begins: 'I don't know whether you are still running the Sunday Dispatch, but if you are, how about an article on the philosophy which underlies the Nazi rule in Germany? Till war broke out…one had to soft-pedal one's views of these monstrous ideas, but now that it has come, one can take off the muzzle and say what one likes.' He outlines the 'main heads' of his article: 'theory of the State, theory of the relation of the individual to the State, theory of the whole duty of man, theory of the whole duty of woman, views as to the education of children, views as to the divinity of Hitler, views as to the secret [last word in autograph] mission of Germans, views as to the non-human character of all non-Aryans'. He has compiled a 'list of charming quotations from Nazi writers and speakers on these subjects', and the whole would make a 'keen article, partly amused (e.g. "Hitler is lonely; so is God. Hitler is like God."), partly horrified (e.g. "Justice and Hitler's will are one and the same thing."), and wholly denunciatory.' In an autograph postscript he writes: 'If you are not running the Dispatch, how are you and what are you doing and are you ever at the Savage [Club]?'.

Throughout his career, he advocated for civic beautification, and he became a leader in the conservation movement of the early twentieth century. His wide-…ranging achievements made a lasting impact on printing processes, horticulture, and environmental protection. During McFarland's early years, his father operated a nursery and a small weekly newspaper in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. McFarland worked in both of his father's businesses as a youth. These early experiences instilled the passion for horticultural beauty and the business expertise that distinguished him personally and professionally. He eventually purchased his father's press. Combining the skills learned from these early experiences, he established a successful printing company of his own. He founded the J. Horace McFarland Company/Mount Pleasant Press, specializing in seed catalogs and nursery trade publications. Over the course of his lifetime, McFarland wrote and lectured extensively on horticulture, printing methods, and civic improvement. McFarland was a prominent member of the American Rose Society. "The enclosed notes on the shooting to be obtained at various places by the Mediterranean Fleet have been collected from many sources during the last 20 years. For information regarding many places in the Aegean or the Levant as it was known in 1893 to our predecessors, I am indebted to 'Sporting Notes in the Levant', published by Lieutenant (now Captain) Dayrell Davies who at that time was serving in the Trafalgar, one of the ships of the Levant Division. .These notes have purposely been printed for private circulation only as it is not desired to give gratuitous information to possible poachers of the Fleet's preserves." Dudley Pound was Chief of Staff to the commander-in-chief of the Mediterranean Fleet (and a Rear Admiral) at the time of publication. He served as First Sea Lord and Admiral of the Fleet from 1939 to 1943, dying of a brain tumour later that year. Chapters include: Safety first; Big game; Small game; Migration; Western Mediterranean; Adriatic and West Coast of Greece; The Aegean; Eastern Mediterranean; Sea of Marmora and Black Sea. Contains brief notes on trout fishing in Yugoslavia. An extremely rare piece of naval and sporting history. .

Nicknamed - The Brain,' Gruenther was instrumental in planning the Allied invasions of North Africa in 1942 and Italy in 1943. Ralph C. Smith (1893-1998), U.S. Army Major General, signed as "Ralph C. Smith / Maj Gen. US ARMY. RET." Smith commanded forces in the Pacific Theater, and was tasked with the defense of the Hawaiian Islands. Maxwell D. Taylor (1901-1987), U.S. Army General. Taylor served with distinction in Sicily, Italy, Normandy, and the Netherlands, and was the commander of the 101st Airborne Division, - The Screaming Eagles.' James Van Fleet (1892-1992), U.S. Army General. Van Fleet's leadership during the Utah Beach landings on D-Day earned him a Distinguished Service Cross. James M. Gavin (1907-1990), U.S. Army Lieutenant General. Gavin trained paratroopers of gliders and parachutes all over the European Theater. Matthew B. Ridgway (1895-1993), U.S. Army General. Ridgway commanded the 82nd Airborne Division in World War II and later led U.N. forces in Korea, reversing the tide against Chinese offensives. United States Air Force: Ira C. Eaker (1896-1987), U.S. Air Force Lieutenant General. Eaker successfully advocated for precision daylight bombing of industrial and military targets in Germany in conjunction with Royal Air Force night raiding. Elwood - Pete' Quesada (1904-1993), U.S. Air Force Lieutenant General. Quesada perfected methods of obtaining real-time information for combined air-ground missions, including the use of pilot air controllers in tanks and the use of early warning radar. Earle E. - Pat' Partridge (1900-1990), U.S. Air Force General, signed as "E.E. Partridge / General U.S. Air Force (ret)." Partridge oversaw Air Force actions in the Pacific Theater, notably in Okinawa. Dean C. Strother (1908-2000), U.S. Air Force General. Strother was sent on missions in the Pacific Theater, in Italy, and to the Soviet Union to assist the Soviets on the Eastern Front. Lauris Norstad (1907-1988), U.S. Air Force General. Norstad was a key planner of Allied air strategy in World War II and later served as Supreme Allied Commander Europe during the early Cold War. The United States declared war against Germany on December 11, 1941, just hours after receiving Germany's declaration of war on the United States. Pub. L 77-331, originally signed by President Franklin D. Roosevelt, Vice President Henry Wallace, and House Speaker Sam Rayburn, had been passed unanimously in both the Senate and the House of Representatives. Of course, this war declaration set the stage for the signers' illustrious military careers during World War II.
