In the dark days after Pearl Harbor, the small, ill equipped arm of the Navy known as Submarine Force would stand between the shattered U.S. Pacific Fleet and the might of the Japanese Navy. Unfortunately, the spirit and courage of the Submarine Force is being forgotten as the veterans of that force pass into history. To preserve their heroic tales of war beneath the sea, critically acclaimed author and military historian Flint Whitlock, in collaboration with decorated World War II submarine veteran Ron Smith, set out on a journey of more than two years to interview submariners and to record their accounts before the memories of their endeavors are lost forever. Paperback. Etat : New. Print on Demand. This book details investigations into the measurement of the aberration and influence of the atmosphere on light passing through mediums using three mirrors to reflect images of celestial bodies into telescope objectives. The author, a director of an astronomical observatory, describes the development of a reflecting prism apparatus, the methods and challenges involved in its use, and provides a detailed theoretical and analytical account of its errors and adjustments. Observations and results from experiments using the apparatus are presented alongside discussions of focal point, instrumental constants, progressive error of the micrometer screw, and the focal length of the objective lens. The author also provides a survey of related work by other astronomers. This book will be of great interest to professional and amateur astronomers, physicists, and all those interested in the development and use of astronomical instruments. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.…

Paperback. Etat : New. Print on Demand. This book provides a detailed account of the observations made at the Washburn Observatory, University of Wisconsin, from 1893 to 1896. The author, an assistant astronomer, describes the methods used to measure the positions of stars and how these measurements were used to calculate their parallaxes, or distances from Earth. The book also includes a discussion of the systematic errors that can affect these measurements and how they were corrected for. The author's work was part of a larger effort by astronomers in the late 19th century to measure the distances to stars and to understand the structure of our galaxy. This book is a valuable resource for anyone interested in the history of astronomy or in the techniques used to measure the distances to stars.
