paperback. Etat : Good. Our good condition books are generally good for reading but not for gifting or collecting. They could have imperfections such as creasing, fanning, inscriptions, margin notes, yellowing, staining on edge or cover or pages, bumps, scuffs, etc etc (sometimes multiple of these). It's a wide category that encompasses anything that isn't almost-new down to anything that is slightly better than poor. We would NOT recommend gifting Good books - these should be considered reading copies. Our books are dispatched from a Yorkshire former cotton mill. We list via barcode/ISBN so please note that the images are stock images and may not be the exact copy you receive, furthermore the details about edition and year might not be accurate as many publishers reuse the same ISBN for multiple editions and as we simply scan a barcode or enter an ISBN we do not check the validity of the edition data when listing. If you're looking for an exact edition please don't order (at least not without checking with us first, although we don't always have time to check). We aim to dispatch prompty, the service used will depend on order value and book size. We can ship to most countries, see our shipping policies. Payment is via Abe only. …

Cloth. 520 pages. Text in English. New (sealed). Professor Theo van Boven has made his mark in the field of human rights by writing a vast number of scholarly articles, reports, studies, congress papers and the like, covering many topics. Most of his work has been published in law journals, textbooks, Festschrifts and other sources. Since not all of these publications are easily accessible, it is the purpose of this anthology to bring together a selection of his writings from 1966 to 1998. The editors have focused on those subjects that played a major part during Theo van Boven's career and that are, in their view, the most interesting to the reader. That is why this volume contains papers on such issues as the United Nations and its role as regards human rights, racial discrimination, the right to rehabilitation, the international criminal tribunals, the role of NGOs and many more. The papers have been arranged in different groups under general headings. Within each group, articles dealing with the same subject have been put in chronological order. A detailed bibliography, covering most of Theo van Boven's publications, is included in this book as an annex. All through his work Theo van Boven displays his sound theoretical background as well as his enormous practical experience. This combination makes his writings so attractive and compelling to read. 777g. …

Etat : as new. Antwerpen : Intersentia , 2004. Paperback. xiv, 281 pp. ills. ; 24 cm. (Maastricht series in human rights, 2). - Be as it is the result of the war on terrorism, foreign military intervention, economic globalisation or otherwise, state conduct increasingly affects the human rights of individuals beyond its own borders. This book provides a comprehensive answer to the question whether existing human rights treaties are applicable in such circumstances. The principal treaties on civil and political rights require states to guarantee certain human rights to persons 'within their jurisdiction'. What is the meaning of these terms? Are states able to evade the application of these treaties by detaining their opponents on foreign soil rather than within their own borders? Does it make a difference to the applicability of these treaties, whether a victim of an extraterritorial assassination by state agents, was a detainee, who had not been arrested? By contrast, treaties on economic, social and cultural rights tend to specifically to provide that states must strive for the full realisation of these rights through international co-operation. The problem here is that the precise nature and content of this obligation is unclear. For example, what is the extent of states' obligations to contribute to sustainable development in other states? What are their obligations as members of the executive bodies of international financial institutions such as the World Bank and the IMF? This book focuses on the extraterritorial application of four key human rights treaties: the two UN Covenants on Human Rights and the American and European Conventions on Human Rights. It reveals that supervisory bodies are inconsistent in their implementation of these treaties and discusses the pros and cons of both a restrictive and a non-restrictive approach. Paperback. Etat : new. Paperback. Chapters How Human Rights Cross-Pollinate and Take Root: Local Governments & Refugees in Turkey by Elif Durmus and Human Rights Localisation and Individual Agency: From Hobby of the Few to the Few Behind the Hobby by Tihomir Sabchev, Sara Miellet, and Elif Durmus are available open access under a Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International License via link.springer.comThis book seeks to explore, from a multidisciplinary perspective, whether human rights are, in fact, a myth or a lived reality. Over the years much has been said about their effectiveness or, rather, their ineffectiveness. This perceived ineffectiveness relates not only to institutional challenges at the international level, but also to national implementation mechanisms and processes. In addition, questions have arisen as to whether individuals or groups of individuals actually benefit from the normative guarantees contained in humanrights law and whether human rights as legal constructs can be effectively translated into better outcomes. This volume can be distinguished from the existing literature by virtue of the fact that it not only brings together scholars at different stages of their careers, but also that it incorporates contributions that adopt different methodological perspectives and cover a variety of topics. The book should prove of great benefit to human rights researchers, human rights practitioners, NGOs and students.Claire Boost is a PhD Candidate at the Department of Criminal Law and Criminology, Maastricht University.Andrea Broderick is an Assistant Professor at the Department of International and European Law, Maastricht University.Fons Coomans is a Professor at the UNESCO Chair in Human Rights and Peace, Department of International and European Law, Maastricht University.Roland Moerland is an Assistant Professor at the Department of Criminal Law and Criminology, Maastricht University.
