As James Enyeart writes in 'A Travelers Notebook': A lifetime of travel places Gus Foster in a succession of artists who have gained insight and inspiration from the exotic and unfamiliar. Fosters panoramic photographs enable even the armchair traveler to experience the enormous grandeur of the Rockies. Essays included are by James Enyeart, Anne and John Marion Professor of Photographic Arts and the Director of the Marion Center at the College of Santa Fe; Alan Wallach, Ralph H. Wark Professor of Art and Art History and Professor of American Studies at the College of William and Mary; Roger Badash, Fosters longtime climbing companion; and Gus Foster. Book has minor shelf wear.

Foster was also impressed by landscapes of the mountain West by pioneer photographers Carleton Watkins, Timothy O'Sullivan, and W. H. Jackson that documented the majestic vastness of the Rocky Mountains. He would spend fifteen years photographing the Rockies, crossing the continent from Canada to Mexico, and climbing the highest summits carrying a load of equipment much like these early photographers. This retrospective monograph is a remarkable visual record of Foster's forty-five-year journey making panoramic images and details the photographer's travels across North America and beyond. From Alaskan glaciers to Times Square in New York City, he turned his cameras on high mountain terrain and desert and urban lowlands, as well the massive acreage used for food production with its landscapes of wheat, corn, wild rice, and other crops. Also included is a selection of Time Photographs made with a portable panoramic camera capturing multiple revolutions of more than 1000 degrees while literally recording multiple moments in time in a single image. ORIGINAL SCRAPBOOK of 1930s MAGAZINE ART in a custom-made box, 11"x14.5", housing (27) leaves of magazine illustrations from the golden era of American magazine illustrations and scrapbook-making. The cut-outs are clean, brightly colored, upbeat and a good representation of 20th century illustration… art. Magazine illustrators include: Alan Foster-- a prolific illustrator for the Saturday Evening Post & Colliers, known for his droll humor and sports pics. Robert Fawcett-- who did story illustrations and full-page ads, appearing in The Saturday Evening Post, Collier's, Holiday and Cosmopolitan. George de Zayas-- a Mexican caricature artist, was best known for work that appeared in Collier's, Harper's Bazaar, and the magazine section of the New York Herald Tribune. Anthony Fraioli. Robert O Reid-- for about 3 years, Reid made amusing, cartoonish illustrations which appeared on Collier's magazine covers and inside as story illustrations, as well as advertisements. Before and after that blaze of professional glory, little of Reid can be readily found. Jorj Harris-- whose work appeared in national magazines as covers, cartoons, illustrations and national advertising campaigns. Gaspano "Gus" Ricca- whose artwork was seen in The New Yorker (1928), Liberty (1933), Time (1934), Collier's (1935), before he pivoted to pulps & comic books. All original (27) disbound leaves were repaired with contemporaneous material; along with the original boards are housed in a custom-made box, 11"x14.5".
