Stud. 1833/34 an der Univ. Wien roman. Sprachen. 1834/35 lebte er in Preßburg, 183540 in Pest, 184042 in Wien, wo er Sprachunterricht erteilte. 1842 in Krumau (Böhmen), 184346 stud. er an der Univ. Prag. 184648 wieder in Wien, sammelte er die Gedichte der burgenländ. Kroaten. 1848 kehrte er nach Kroatien zurück. Seit 1830 Anhänger der kroat. Nationalbewegung, betätigte sich K. 1848 auch polit. als Sekretär des Vize-Banus M. Lentulaj, verfaßte antiung. Proklamationen und warb auf seinen Reisen durch Slawonien Anhänger für die kroat. Sache. 184953 lehrte er Kroat. am Gymn. in Fiume. 1853 aus polit. Gründen entlassen, lebte er dann in Fiume als Privatlehrer fremder Sprachen. 186164 unterrichtete K. in Diakovár am bischöflichen Lyzeum Altslaw. 1866/67 war er Hilfslehrer der französ. Sprache am Gymn. in Agram, wurde aber wegen einer polit. Demonstration aus dem Dienste entlassen. 1867 Mitgl. der Jugoslaw. Akad. der Wiss. K., ein guter Übersetzer und ausgezeichneter Stilist, der Begründer der sogenannten Fiumaner philolog. Schule, beschäftigte sich hauptsächlich mit der kroat. Philol. Er schrieb philolog.
