Nel cuore del Monferrato, sulla sommità di una collina circondata da un meraviglioso paesaggio vitivinicolo, sorge il Sacro Monte di Crea, fondato nel 1589 su iniziativa di Costantino Massino, priore lateranense del Santuario della Madonna Assunta. Costantino Massino propose di costruire un itinerario religioso ispirato al Sacro Monte di Varallo, per favorire la preghiera e la meditazione e per rinnovare la devozione mariana legata al Santuario, meta di pellegrinaggio di notevole importanza fin dall'XI secolo. Il forte legame fra il santuario e la dinastia regnante nel Monferrato rese partecipi dellâimpresa il duca, la nobiltÃ, lâalto clero e le comunità locali. Nella prima fase della storia del Sacro Monte, che si concluse intorno al 1657, lavorarono importanti artisti attivi anche nei Sacri Monti di Orta, Varallo e Varese, tra i quali il Moncalvo, i Prestinari e i de Wespin, autori dello spettacolare complesso scultoreo della cappella del Paradiso (c. 23), realizzato negli anni che vanno tra il 1604 e il 1612. Durante il XVIII secolo il Sacro Monte cadde poco alla volta in stato di abbandono e, tra 1796 e 1801, le incusioni delle truppe rivoluzionarie francesi contribuirono alla rovina di molte strutture, statue e affreschi. Per alcuni decenni il Sacro Monte fu abbandonato e soltanto nel 1820 una comunità di frati francescani, diventati responsabili del Santuario, cominciarono a ripristinare alcuni edifici. Nel 1885 comincià una sistematica campagna di restauro, supportata dal vescovo di Milano Nazari di Calabiana e destinata a durare fino agli anni Venti del Novecento.
