Reeditada varias veces en Italia, fue ampliamente reconocida en Europa traduciéndose al alemán, al francés y al inglés en apenas 15 años. Sin embargo, en castellano no vio la luz hasta 1610 (en Barcelona, por Sebastián de Comellas, parcialmente censurada), cuando ya se había impreso hasta en latín, tras varios intentos infructuosos de publicación de otras traducciones (no menos de 8)(1), y no lo fue en Portugal. ¿Los motivos? Su venta había sido prohibida tanto en Portugal, porque no podía aceptarse sin problemas como fue su incorporación temporal a Castilla y se consideraba que defendía los intereses castellanos, como en España, porque se consideraba que la descripción de cómo transcurrieron los acontecimientos no era nada halagüeña para la Corona. La prueba más evidente fue la publicación por el cronista Antonio de Herrera de sus 'Cinco libros de la historia de Portugal y la conquista de las islas Azores', impreso en 1591, pero escrito en 1586, donde presentaba el acceso de Felipe II a la corona portuguesa como una feliz unión de dos reinos por el ejericicio de derechos legítimos. Translated by Edward Blount (?) who had it printed in folio by Arnold Hatfield in 1600. . Scott suspects that the real author was Juan de Silva, fourth Count of Portalegre, who concealed himself behind the name of Girolamo Franchi de Conestaggio. Dedicated to Henry Wriothesley, third Earl of Southhampton by Edward Blount. No later edition." A Bibliographical Catalogue of Italian Books Printed in England 15581603. Of particular interest is its treatment of the voyages of discovery and of Portuguese colonial expansion, especially in Africa (in battles against the Moors), Asia and the Southern Americas, its description of the states of the Colonies (e.g. Brazil apparently was only a penal colony while the Moluccas were prized for their cloves and nutmeg), and the role of the Jesuits in state affairs. Contemporary events in Europe are not ignored. The House of Hapsburg and the Prince of Orange figure fairly frequently and even the story of the request of aid from the people of Ireland to the Pope, against Queen Elizabeth I is recorded. The work begins with the genealogy of the Kings of Portugal from 1090 to 1527. The translation is almost certainly by Edward Blount (1565-1632), though it was also attributed to Marlowe, publisher and translator into English of a number of popular Spanish and Italian works of the day, including the first English edition of Cervantes. Interestingly the work has a double Shakespeare connection. It is dedicated by Blount to Henry Wriothesley, Earl of Southampton, Shakespeare's close friend and patron and Blount, of course, with Jaggard, was the publisher of Shakespeare's great first folio. The early autograph could well be that of John Johnson of Cranbrook (16621725) the theologian who published several theological works in the Laudian tradition. STC 5624. Lowndes II, 508. Raríssima 1ª edição da tradução alemã (desconhecida de Inocêncio a José dos Santos e muitos outros bibliógrafos) da autoria de Albrecht Fürst da célebre obra Dell?unione del regno di Portogallo alla corona di Castiglia . Genova, Girolamo Bartoli. 1585. A obra conheceu grande difusão sendo reeditada em Itália várias vezes: Génova 1589, Veneza 1592, Milão 1616, Verona 1642 e traduzida para as principais línguas da Europa: Francês, 1595, reeditada em 1601; Inglês, por Edward Blount, 1600; Latim 1602; Espanhol, por Luís de Bavia, 1610 (com alterações nos passos em que Conestaggio se mostra hostil a Espanha); e novamente para francês em 1680 com reedição em 1695. Nela o autor descreve como o Rei de Espanha, Filipe II, se tornou rei de Portugal como Filipe I. Conestaggio narra os antecedentes, nomeadamente a campanha em África do Rei D. Sebastião e a sua morte na Batalha de Alcácer Quibir, a batalha de Alcântara entre as tropas de D. António e do Duque de Alba e a derrota da esquadra inglesa nos Açores. O autor exerceu as suas actividades comerciais em Lisboa de cerca de 1576 a 1582, sendo assim uma testemunha privilegiada dos acontecimentos históricos que descreve. Quanto à Batalha de Alcácer Quibir, ter-se-á baseado em informações de D. João da Silva, que acompanhou D. Sebastião na batalha como embaixador de Filipe II, o que levou alguns a dizer, erradamente, que seria D. João o autor. A atribuição desta obra a D. João da Silva, 4º Conde de Portalegre, feita por Inocêncio a partir de uma vagas alusões de D. Francisco Manuel de Melo e de Gracián não tem base. Conestaggio é um notável historiador e poeta e foi a sua posição independente, patente nesta obra e na História das Guerras da Flandres que, provavelmente, levou os seus adversários a inventarem esta mentira. O historiador Queiroz Veloso, na sua obra sobre D. Sebastião, p. 316, afirma a autoria de Conestaggio e considera que o facto de o autor ter tido como fonte D. João valoriza a obra. As investigações de Giacinto Mnuppela sobre Conestaggio, publicadas em 1957, 1960 e 1984, resolveram definitivamente a questão da autoria a favor do italiano. O autor desagradou aos espanhóis e aos portugueses tendo sido, neste caso, certos passos da sua obra contestados por Jerónimo Mendonça na obra com o título Jornada de África, na qual se responde a Hieronymo Franqui e a outros, e se trata do sucesso da batalha [de Alcácer Quibir]. Lisboa, por Pedro Craesbeeck 1607. Girolamo Conestaggio (Génova c. 1530 - Génova ou Amsterdão c. 1618) foi um comerciante, diplomata, poeta e historiador. Viveu em Anvers, Flandres de 1552 a 1576, ano em que se instalou em Lisboa até 1580. A parte final da sua vida decorreu em Génova, tendo desempenhado, em 1590, as funções de cônsul de Génova em Veneza. Não se sabe se faleceu em Génova ou na Flandres. Além da obra em apreço escreveu História da tentativa da Conquista de Argel, Génova, 1601; Delle Guerre della Germania Inferiore, Veneza 1614; e Rime . Amsterdão, 1619. It has also been translated into the main European languages: French, 1595, re-edited in1601; English by Edward Blount, 1600; Latin 1602; Spanish by por Luís de Bavia, 1610 (who changed the parts where Conestaggio shows hostility against Spain); and again into French in 1680, reprinted in 1695. The author describes the way the king of Spain, Filipe II, became the king Filipe I of Portugal. Conestaggio narrates the events that led up to it, mainly the crusade in Africa of king D. Sebastião and his death in the battle of Alcácer Quibir; the battle of Alcântara between the troops of D. António and of the Duque of Alba; and the defeat of the English fleet in the Azores. The author started his business in Lisbon from 1576 to 1582, thus being a privileged witness of the historical events he describes. As for the battle of Alcácer Quibir, it may have been based on information from D. João da Silva, who accompanied D. Sebastião into battle as ambassador of king Filipe II. This led to some, wrongfully, saying that the author was D. João. The authorship of this work to D. João da Silva, 4th Count of Portalegre, made by Inocêncio from some vague references by D. Francisco Manuel de Melo and Gracián is misconc.
