Mensen verwachten veel van scholen: dat ze leerlingen goed kwalificeren voor beroep of vervolgopleiding maar ook dat ze leerlingen mede vormen tot zelfstandige burgers in de maatschappij. Scholen worden, naast ouders als eerste opvoeders, wel aangeduid als 'tweede opvoeders'. In een grootschalig, langlopend onderzoek is veel material verzameld om antwoord te krijgen op vragen over probleemgedrag.
