The Kiser Brothers, Fred Kiser (1878-1955) and Oscar Kiser (1883-1905) began shooting photos as a hobby, but very quickly became successful commercial photographers, and one of the best artistic photographers in the country during the first three decades of the 20th century. They sold their images as prints, photo albums, stereoviews, postcards, glass lantern slides, and even later hand-coloured many of them and sold them to tourists and collectors as framed, or unframed art prints.

Some… light shelf-wear, else and excellent copy.Brothers Fred and Oscar Kiser began taking scenic photographs as a hobby, which evolved into a business in 1902. Their early career was boosted when they were named the official photographers for Portland?s Lewis and Clark Exposition in 1905. The brothers were in business together until Oscar died of accidental drowning in late 1905. After Oscar?s death, Fred became a premier photographer of mountain landscapes, and one of the most successful commercial photographers in the country during the first decades of the twentieth century. Kiser?s photographs of Crater Lake helped publicize the lake, and his work photographing northwestern Montana contributed to the creation of Glacier National Park. Additionally, Kiser worked as a photographer for the Great Northern Railway and took photos of the construction of the Columbia River Highway in the years prior to World War I. After the War, Kiser started the Scenic America Company to sell his colorized prints using the slogan ?See America First.? This may have been the first use of that now famous slogan. Under this company name, he sold prints and developed film at Crater Lake throughout the 1920s. He later moved to the Los Angeles area, where he died in 1955.The Oregon Caves National Monument is located in the southwest corner of Oregon, twenty miles east of Cave Junction, in Josephine County. In 1874, Elijah J. Davidson, a prospector and hunter, came upon the cave during a hunting trip in the Siskiyou Mountains. Previously unknown by the area's white settlers, the cave quickly captured the curiosity of many individuals interested not only in exploration of the cave, but also in its potential commercial development. In 1885, Walter Burch and Homer Harkness inititated a plan of development which was to include trail access to the "Limestone Caves," cave tours, and accommodations. After dropping their claim in 1887, another attempt at promotion was made by the Oregon Cave Improvement Company (1894), but this venture failed. Through the efforts of Joaquin Miller and Chandler B. Watson, the Oregon Caves National Monument was dedicated by President Taft on July 12, 1909. Under the guidance of Dick Rowley, ranger-in-charge at the monument, a program of trails, access roads, and accommodations was again initiated. The Oregon Caves Highway opened in 1923, bringing an estimated 10,000 visitors to the monument during its first year of operation. In 1924, the Oregon Caves Resort Company began operating concessions for the National Park Service and oversaw the management of two rustic hostelries - the Chalet (ca. 1923) and the newer Chateau (1934). In 1934, management of the Oregon Caves National Monument was transferred from the U.S. Forest Service to the National Park Service. In 1941, a new Chalet was built.

Present are scores of crisp, uniform photos showing outings to Mount Shasta and Mount Hood, as well as views of the San Francisco Pan-Pacific Exposition. This section contains 88 photographs taken by Davidson or Fred Kiser, showing various mountain excursions including "Dr. Luther's Summit Party, "The Ridge Trip" and "the Shastina Trip." This last trek was recounted by Davidson in the December, 1915, issue of "Mazama," the club's magazine, writing that it was "one of the most enjoyable excursions from Camp Bronaugh and by far the most strenuous." Davidson notes that Dr. Carl Barck (pictured in the album) was persuaded to lead a party to the summit and did so, "with unerring foresight," leading the group "over the steep sides of the bowl-like, hard-frozen snow slopes on a gentle rise all the while, never losing a foot of altitude." A particular difficulty arose when, "the sun appeared over the mountains and proceeded to shine with an intensity that is only known in California," which made that leg of the journey almost unbearable for the group. After reaching the top, they took a different route back, "in order to take advantage of several long snow slides," which is pictured in the album (and looks quite fun!). The group returned to camp feeling enthusiastic and "well repaid for their efforts." Another photograph shows a group setting out for a "moonlight glissade." This adventure is recounted by Manzamas member Minna Backus in the same issue of "The Manzama." Backus writes that, as opposed to the Shastina trek, on this journey there was "No bothersome grease paint or goggles and no danger of sunburn! Just a clear, mild evening with a gorgeous California sunset setting off the sharp outlines of Castle Crag." There are also many charming views of life at Camp Bronaugh, including a view of Davidson's tent comically captioned "Hotel de Davidson," a shot of two people chopping vegetables captioned "coming events," as well as photos of a "ball game," "sunday services," "the commissary," "a pack train" "The wax model exhibition" "the graduating exercises," and more. This section ends with a group portrait taken at Shasta Springs by Fred Kiser, which shows Davidson proudly holding his camera, along with an unidentified Mazama member displaying hers as well. The second section is titled "Lens Notes on the Panama-Pacific International Exposition San Francisco, California 1915, Taken July 21-24" and it contains 19 photographs and 18 photo postcards of the fair and other views around San Francisco. The last section (though chronologically earlier) is titled "Photographs taken on Mazama Outing to Mount Hood, July 3-4-5, 1915" and contains 28 photographs, most by photographers identified on the prints or in the negative as Bush, Markham, and Benz. The Mazamas is one of the oldest mountaineering clubs in the United States. Founded in 1894, the educational nonprofit organization located in Portland, Oregon provides alpine activities such as climbing and skiing as well as advocacy efforts towards conservation. The original members banded together with the goal of promoting scientific exploration and preservation of natural beauty, naming the group after the Aztec word for mountain goat.
