Hardcover. Etat : Very Good. Etat de la jaquette : Very Good. Reprint 1st Thus. Modern Library No. 144., Rare, Reprint First Thus Edition, First Printing from roughly 1942 to 1944 due to the price of the "Giant Editions" on the back dj cover being $1.45. True hardback, not one of the earlier decaying leatherette softcovers. Probably the first real hardback. Slight musty odor. Mottling on book covers. Book has straight stiff spine, pointed tips, no leans or dings. Blue boards and top stain.Vincent Starrett does the introduction in this edition and that was also changed in the 1949 edition. Original aqua and black dust jacket with picture is not price clipped (.95) and has Modern Library catalog listed on the back. Earlier jackets were brown with no picture, just lists of authors. This jacket has no lists on the front cover. The later 1949 jacket reintroduced the lists. General overall wear with slight crumple and loss at spine ends, tips and most edges. Looks spiffy in new plastic cover protector. Not Signed.

hardcover. Etat : Very Good. Publication: London, Hodder and Stoughton, 1937 Formatting: 8vo, pp. 1080. Condition Report Very Good. The binding remains firm and square, presenting nicely in the publisher's original cloth despite some minor age-related wear. The spine is slightly sunned with minor rubbing to the head and tail, while the boards show only light handling marks and slightly bumped corners. Internally, the text block is sound, though there is scattered foxing, most notably to the preliminary pages, endpapers, and the fore-edges of the text block, which is typical for a weighty volume of this era. The pages are otherwise clean and free of significant blemishes. Catalogue Note This substantial volume is a 1937 reprint of the celebrated 1929 omnibus edition, collecting thirty-seven of R. Austin Freeman's most famous Dr. Thorndyke investigations. Issued by Hodder and Stoughton, this edition showcases the publisher's classic oatmeal cloth binding lettered and ruled in black. The front free endpaper bears a neat contemporary ink ownership signature dated 1940. Given the book's substantial size and page count, vintage copies in this condition, with the binding intact, square, and uncracked, are increasingly uncommon on the open market. Long before modern forensic science became a staple of popular culture, R. Austin Freeman introduced readers to Dr. John Thorndyke, a pioneering medico-legal investigator who relied on meticulous logic, chemistry, and trace evidence to solve seemingly impossible crimes. This massive omnibus edition gathers thirty-seven of Thorndyke's most baffling cases into a single, comprehensive volume. A true cornerstone of golden age detective fiction, Freeman's meticulously plotted mysteries remain a masterclass in deductive reasoning and atmospheric storytelling. N/A (illustrateur).

hardcover. Etat : Very Good. Publication: London, Hodder & Stoughton, 1946 Formatting: 8vo, publisher's original cloth, dust-jacket. Condition Report: Very Good. The publisher's original beige cloth binding remains firm and structurally sound, exhibiting only mild shelf-wear and slight bumping to the spine ends, while the red stamped lettering to the spine remains sharp and unoxidised. Internally, the binding is tight and square; the text block shows uniform, mild age-toning consistent with post-war paper stock, but remains clean and free from serious blemishes. The original unclipped dust wrapper (priced 5/- net) shows handling, presenting with edge-creasing, minor chipping to the extremities, and some rubbing across the front panel. Notably, the wrapper has neat, historical tape repairs to the verso at the head of the spine and flap folds to prevent further tearing. Catalogue Note: This is the "New Library Edition," printed in March 1946 by Hazell, Watson & Viney, Ltd. for Hodder & Stoughton. Originally published in 1927, this post-war reprint is notably scarce on the open market when accompanied by its original dust wrapper. The wrapper itself is a quintessential example of the iconic Hodder & Stoughton "Yellow Jacket" series, which remains highly sought after by collectors of Golden Age detective fiction. While later impressions of Freeman's work are relatively common as bare hardcovers, the survival of the fragile, illustrated paper jacket elevates this copy's collectability. When retired soap manufacturer and obsessive collector Mr. Hollis decides to stash his extraordinary hoard of precious stones and bullion in a specially designed strong room, he considers his wealth entirely secure. However, upon discovering he has been the victim of a baffling, seemingly impossible robbery, with the sealed room completely unbreached, the legendary medico-detective Dr. Thorndyke is summoned. Blending a locked-room jewel heist in London with a thrilling tale of a disguised fugitive fleeing along the African Gold Coast, Freeman weaves a complex and highly satisfying mystery that tests Thorndyke's unparalleled scientific acumen to its limits. N/A (illustrateur).

soft. Etat : Fair. First Edition. Publication: London, Hodder & Stoughton, 1913. Formatting: 8vo, pp. [viii], 119. Condition Report: Fair. This fragile early paperback survival exhibits significant wear, typical of the cheap ephemeral materials used for sixpenny editions. The pictorial front wrapper is completely detached from the text block, and the fragile paper spine has almost entirely perished, leaving only minor remnants. The edges of the wrappers are moderately chipped, rubbed, and lightly creased. Internally, the contemporary paper stock is heavily age-toned, yet the text block remains remarkably solid and firmly bound, with the pages largely free from severe tears or significant foxing. Despite the exterior flaws, the striking cover artwork remains bright and legible. Catalogue Note: First published in 1907, this 1913 iteration by Hodder & Stoughton within their "Famous Sixpenny Novels" series represents the first paper-bound edition of Freeman's seminal work. Early mass-market paperbacks of this era were printed cheaply and intended to be disposable; consequently, surviving copies are notoriously scarce on the open market. This copy retains its publisher's original period advertisements, including notable promotions for Sunlight Soap, Swan Pens, and Chlorodyne, providing a fascinating window into Edwardian consumer culture. A cornerstone of Golden Age detective fiction, The Red Thumb Mark introduces readers to Dr. John Thorndyke, a brilliant medico-legal forensic investigator. When a bloody thumbprint is used as evidence to frame an innocent man for theft, Thorndyke is called upon to exonerate him. Pioneering the fictional use of forensic evidence and exploring the revolutionary concept that fingerprints could be forged, R. Austin Freeman's meticulous debut Thorndyke mystery remains a masterclass in Edwardian plotting. N/A (illustrateur).

hardcover. Etat : Good. First Edition. Publication: London, Hodder and Stoughton, 1925 Formatting: 8vo, pp. 320. Condition Report Good. The book remains tightly bound and structurally sound, a commendable trait for a popular genre fiction title of this era, indicating it has not suffered the heavy mishandling typical of circulating libraries. The original red cloth boards show only minor shelf wear and light bumping to the extremities. The spine, however, is heavily sunned and colour-faded, a notorious flaw associated with the fugitive red dyes utilised by publishers during this period, with some associated darkening near the joints. Internally, the text block is largely clean and legible; however, moderate, spotty foxing is present along the page block edges and is scattered across the preliminary and terminal leaves. An unassuming, contemporary ownership signature resides on the front free endpaper. Overall, a robust, honest copy that presents well despite the exterior fading. Catalogue Note This is a true UK First Edition, first printing, issued in October 1925. The book is presented in its primary publisher's red cloth binding, stamped with black lettering to the spine and upper board. While R. Austin Freeman's Dr. Thorndyke mysteries were printed in substantial commercial runs, surviving early UK first editions, particularly those that have not been heavily compromised by institutional library wear or subsequent rebinding, have become increasingly elusive on the open market. This copy retains a standard prior ownership inscription, adding a touch of contemporary provenance without detracting from the book's underlying collectability. In The Shadow of the Wolf, R. Austin Freeman delivers another masterclass in the "inverted" detective story format he pioneered. When a seemingly flawless murder is committed on the rugged Cornish coast, the perpetrator believes they have accounted for every possible variable and secured an ironclad alibi. They have, however, failed to account for the unparalleled scientific acumen of Dr. John Evelyn Thorndyke. Armed with his iconic green research case, his encyclopaedic knowledge of natural history, and an unwavering commitment to forensic truth, Thorndyke meticulously deconstructs the killer's narrative. A riveting tale of suspense and deduction, proving that even the most carefully constructed lies can be unravelled by a single, microscopic clue. N/A (illustrateur).
