The woodcuts are attributed to Michael Wolgemut and his workshop. The facsimile volume includes all woodcuts in the original order and seize, and was reproduced with planographic printing. This method accomplishes the soft alignment of the original. To the reproductions of the woodcuts in volume two facsimile text pages were added to provide the impression of the original columns and script. The text volume provides the up-to-date status of the research in terms of the origin of the "Schatzbehalter" and should familiarize the reader with the author as well as the structure of his work. It contains notes and bibliography at rear. Text in German. Usual library marking, barcode and sticker on front covers, stickers at tail of spines. One of the most beautiful and most famous illustrated incunabula. This work with Schedel's Chronicle (1493) is one of the "two first important books with original illustrations published at Nuremberg". Dogson I. pp. 241.2. Der Schatzbehalter oder Schrein der wahren Reichtümer des Heils und der ewigen Seligkeit genant [Le Gardien du trésor, dit Écrin des vraies richesses du Salut et du Paradis éternel] was published in 1491, in Nuremberg. The Schatzbehalter preceded by two years the Nuremberg Chronicle. It is due to Franciscan monk Stephan Fridolin (c. 1430-1498), then preacher of the Sisters Poor Clares of the city, died in 1498. Steeped in theology, the work is based on the life of Christ. This is the main book of the author, who took advantage here of his immense erudition, acquired throughout his activities as a preacher and reader in the convents of Bamberg, Mainz and, from 1480, Nuremberg. Printed by Anton Koberger, the work after the Breydenbach of 1486, is almost seen as the first illustrated book in Germany in the 15th century, of which the figures can be attributed with certainty to a famous artist, several plates bearing the signature of Wolgemuth. The absolutely superb iconography is composed of 96 full-page (252 x 176 mm) large woodcuts, especially drawn for the text. Due to Michael Wolgemuth (1434-1519), Durer's Master, they attest of a great mastery of the artist in the composition of the various scenes, the richness of expression of the faces and the details precision especially for the clothes and the daily life. Others are due to Wilhelm Pleydenwurff, to artists from the Wolgemuth's artist studio and perhaps to Durer himself. Michael Wohlgemuth occupied an incredible situation in Nuremberg and seems to have been considered there as the most eminent painter of his time. "Durer who was his pupil admired him so much that he painted his portrait twice, the second time when he was 82 years old." Benezit X 778. This superb suite of different illustrations related to the life of Christ allows Wohlgemuth to interpret in powerful scenes the main episodes of the Bible and the New Testament: Terrestrial Paradise, Moses, Abraham, Nativity, Flight into Egypt, Baptism of Christ, Christ chasing the merchants of the Temple, the Last Supper, the Passion, the Last Judgment… Many outdoor scenes are set in front of landscapes, fortified strongholds or contemporary buildings… In addition to the main protagonists, many other characters move in clearly architectural settings or landscapes, whose role is both ornamental and symbolic. Countless savory details concern the interior architecture, the arming, the ships, the means of transport and the customs of the time, the banquets and the costumes of the 15th century, especially the fashion for women. Das religiöse Werk aus der Gattung der Erbauungsliteratur nimmt mit Inhalt, Struktur und Anliegen auch eine bedeutende Stellung im frühhumanistischen Umfeld der Freien Reichsstadt ein. Der größte Teil der ca. 200 erhaltenen Exemplare ist unkoloriert, das Mainzer Exemplar aus der Martinus-Bibliothek gehört zu der kleinen Gruppe von Prachtexemplaren. Die 7 im Mainzer Exemplar fehlenden Holzschnitte wurden aus dem Schatzbehalter der Universitäts- und Landesbibliothek Darmstadt ergänzt. Letzterer ist außerdem in vollem Umfang, also zusätzlich mit allen Textseiten, auf der beiliegenden CD-ROM wiedergegeben, so dass man die beiden in unterschiedlicher Qualität kolorierten Exemplare miteinander vergleichen kann. The Schatzbehalter was written by Stephan Fridolin, spiritual guide and confes…sor to the Poor Clares at Nuremberg, almost certainly at the behest of the nuns and their abbess, Caritas Pirckheimer, sister to Willibald. The text is based on Scripture and tells the story of the life and passion of Christ in 100 events; the accompanying illustrations were intended to impress the story more firmly on the mind of the audience, specifically those unable to read, as Fridolin states in the preface. It thus joins other late medieval works popularizing Scripture in text and image, such as the blockbook Biblia Pauperum. In his discussion of each woodcut, Fridolin explicates the literal and metaphysical meaning of the image, thus giving the modern reader an invaluable insight into medieval interpretation of imagery.

An original leaf from Schatzbehalter der wahren Reichtümer des Heils [Treasure Chest of the True Riches of Salvation] by Stephan Fridolin, a late medieval work popularizing Scripture in text and image. Printed in Nuremberg by Anton Koberger on 8 November 1491, thus a true incunabulum. One of 354 leaves.…Leaf size: 29.25 x 21 cm. Each leaf side contains, underneath a heading, 41 printed lines in 2 columns. Col. width: 7.3 cm. The recto heading is, cristi uber sich genummenhaben, likely a continuation of the heading of the previous page. The verso heading is, wie alle wirdigkeit cristi beschemetist worden, [How Christ's dignity was humiliated]. Both headings in lower case. Printed at the foot of the second column recto is signature "a c"; without foliation or catchword. As to the recto page, in the margin at the base of the first column is a handwritten notation in light black ink. In the upper right margin is a notation that appears to read 1Ag. As to the verso page, in the left margin is a handwritten notation in black ink. Also with a light crescent-shaped stain along the top half of the inner margin as to both sides and a much smaller light stain below that, else clean. No worm holes or wrinkling observed. Rated a Good Plus to Very Good Minus leaf. Although most incunabula were printed in Latin, best estimates are that 10.8 percent were printed in German, using the Latin alphabet. Northern Bavarian (Nordbairisch) was a dialect spoken in the Nuremberg area in the Middle High German era, 1050-1350, but overlapped with East Franconian (Ostfränkisch). These were regional forms of German gradually losing status during 1350-1650, the Early New High German (Frühneuhochdeutsch) era. Since the ENHG printers had a commercial interest in making their texts acceptable to a wide readership, they often strove to avoid purely local forms of language. This gave rise to so-called Druckersprachen ("printers' languages"), which are not necessarily identical to the spoken dialect of the town where the press was located. Most MHG and ENHG words survive into modern German in some form or other: this leaf contains one word (jehen 'say') which has since disappeared from the language. But many words have changed their meaning substantially. Typeface closely resembles that used by Anton Koberger of Nuremberg in his 1483 German Bible and 1488 German translation of the Golden Legend, but not that of his 1484 Reformation der Stadt Nurnberg.
