First published in 1950 and issued here in its September 1958 fifth printing, the work delivers a critical survey of urban form across six structural sections, tracing civic evolution from ancient gridirons and medieval enclosures through industrialization, modern zoning ordinances, and post-war suburban expansion. The volume serves as a visual archive of twentieth-century planning history. The text integrates architectural illustrations throughout, including black-and-white aerial survey photographs by Fairchild Aerial Surveys, historical fortification diagrams, regional transit plans, and legislative zoning maps. Co-authored by Arthur B. Gallion, Dean of the School of Architecture at the University of Southern California, alongside municipal planning consultant Simon Eisner, the treatise addressed the socio-economic realities of mid-century urban growth. Gallion and Eisner united physical architectural design with municipal administration, housing policy, and democratic civic responsibility.
