Mehmet Fuat Köprülü, aka Köprülüzade, who traced his descent from the illustrious Köprülü family, was a Turkish politician and historian, known for his contributions to Ottoman history, Turkish folklore and language.A founding member of the Democratic Party along with Celal Bayar, Adnan Menderes, and Refik Koraltan, Köprülü served under Menderes as Minister of Foreign Affairs from 1950 to 1955 and briefly as Deputy Prime Minister in 1956. As a historian his works included Origins Of the Ottoman Empire, The Seljuks of Anatolia: Their History and Culture According to Local Muslim Sources and Islam in Anatolia After the Turkish Invasion: Prolegomena. He is also the founder of one of the perspectives which try to understand the rise of the Ottoman tribe and the direction of its expansion. A Mehmet Fuat Koprulu Scholarship Programme has recently been set up to provide funds for Turkish students to undertake PhD study at the University of Cambridge.

This groundbreaking book challenges many stereotypical views about the historical practice of prostitution. Based on twenty years' research, and organized by region, it charts the history of sex for sale in those chief centres of the late antique and medieval East, whether in Arabia, Egypt, Syria or Anatolia. Ranging extensively from 300 CE to 1500 (or from the reign of Theodosius to the early Ottoman period), Gary Leiser meticulously examines the available sources and argues for a reappraisal of the so-called oldest profession. He suggests that it was never prohibited; that there was remarkable continuity between Christian and Muslim rule; and that prostitution was institutionalized as a 'service industry' at various times. Indicating that sex work in the East had its own distinctive character and meanings (for example, that it was taxed from the time of Caligula onwards and that prostitutes were expected to retain tax receipts), the book brings continually fresh insights to a controversial subject.

It describes the origin and spread of these institutions, their teachers, and their role in the religious life of Egypt. This work is a revised version of the author's 1976 University of Pennsylvania doctoral dissertation, which remains one of the most important works on the history of the premodern institution of the madrasa to date. Unlike many publications on the madaris in recent decades, which argue that medieval Islamic legal education was informal and lacked structure, the present work endeavours to detect the elements of structure and order in the institution of the madrasa and in its educational curricula and the practices associated with it. Leiser's ground-breaking work stands out for its attention to detail and to the political, economic, and religious background of twelfth- and thirteenth-century Egypt. A study of the early history of Islamic law schools (s. madrasa, pl. madaris) and their professors in late Faimid and Aiyubid Egypt (495-647/1101-1249). It describes the origin and spread of these institutions, their teachers, and their role in the religious life of Egypt.
