Ajouter au panierHardcover. Etat : Very Good. No Jacket. 1st Edition. Our County and Its People: A Memorial Record of St. Lawrence County, New York is a comprehensive local history edited by Gates Curtis and published in 1894 by D. Mason & Company in Syracuse, New York. It is one of the most important historical and genealogical references for St. Lawrence County. This county, bordering the St. Lawrence River is the largest in New York and presently the southern third is part of the Adirondack park. The book is divided into three major sections: Historical Section, pages 1-720. This section covers the early settlement of St. Lawrence County, Native American history, pioneer life, development of towns, transportation, education, churches, industries, and local government. There is quite a lot about the Fenian controversy and the role of the county in the War of 1812. Indeed the book is filled with details of towns and people which otherwise might be lost from history. Biographical Section, 66 pages : Contains detailed biographies of many prominent citizens, community leaders, business people, and public officials from across the county. Personal Sketches, 354 pages: Includes shorter family and individual histories that are especially valuable for genealogy research. There is an index for each part. 18 pages in total. The Index for the Biographical part is damaged with loss of about two inches in one column, about 12 names. The volume is illustrated primarily with numerous full-page portraits. In addition there is a large fold out map of the County (with one minor tear) which is a copy of Franklin Hough's map from his history published in the 1850's. This is a valuable resource for historians, genealogists, and residents interested in the history of the county and each of its towns and villages. This copy has been rebound which is a positive. My previous experience with copies of this work is that the original binding was insufficient for the massive contents and frequently separated from the contents. Weight: 8 lbs. 4 oz. Pages are edged in gilt. Prior owners signature on ffep dated 1894. Any sales out of the United States will require payment of additional shipping charges based on the actual cost and method of shipping.…
