UNCLE VANYA, by Anton Chekhov, Adapted by Gavin BantockGreat Dramas for Student Actors, Vol. 5 The least known but probably the greatest of Chekhov's major plays. A deeply moving drama of frustration and failure - unfulfilled love, broken dreams, academic insignificance, thwarted ambitions, and the emptiness of wasted youth. The main characters - Professor Serebriakov, his second wife Elena, his daughter Sonya, her Uncle Vanya, and their talkative neighbour Doctor Astrov - all feel a deep dissatisfaction with their past and present lives and see little hope in the future. A tragedy about things that do not happen - punctuated by violent outbursts of passion, impulsive actions and unexpected moments of humour. A play deeply concerned with the destruction of the natural environment - a subject highly relevant in the modern world, even though the play was written over a hundred years ago. A Play in Nine Scenes, by Gavin BantockNew Classic Adaptations for the Stage, Vol. 6 Osamu Dazai's short story Run, Melos! is regarded as a classic in Japan and is very popular especially among high-school teachers and students. Even in translation, it maintains its classic stature. Its theme of steadfast friendship overcoming all odds is deeply moving and inspirational, and indeed appeals to all ages. The increasing suspense of the story makes it an ideal vehicle for the live stage, and the audience watches with bated breath as the young Melos encounters one obstacle after another - a broken bridge and a turbulent river to be crossed, a band of brigands to be quelled single-handledly, and the sheer exhaustion Melos suffers as he runs mile after mile, almost dying of thirst, coughing blood and collapsing scarcely a mile from his destination, and only just able to make a final desperate effort to save his friend from death by crucifixion. Based on an ancient Greek legend and the much later ballad by the German writer Friedrich Schiller (1759-1805), the story shows how the evil machinations of corrupt power are overcome by the moral strength of friendship and Christian purity of spirit. KANJINCHO, The Subscription List, by Namiki Gohei, Adapted by Gavin Bantock: Oriental Adaptations for the Stage, Vol. 2 One of Kabuki's most famous masterpieces, in two separate editions - the first a short version based closely on the Japanese original, and the second an expanded version completely re-set in Italy in what might be termed 'Shakespearean' style (renaming the characters and relocating the action). A drama of gripping suspense in which the loyal retainer Benkei, a former priest, uses his deep knowledge of Buddhism to enable his master Yoshitsune to outwit the border warden Togashi Saemon and cross the barrier at Ataka in north-west Japan and escape from his vengeful elder brother the Shogun Yoritomo. In the second version, the priest Benedict uses his understanding of Christian lore to get the better of the frontier warden Simon Goldenoak to enable his master Lord Justinian to cross the frontier from Italy into France and escape from his elder brother Juliano, the Duke of Naples An excruciating dilemma: the only way to save his master is to beat him unmercifully almost to death - an unforgivable breach of the strict social order. An amazing example of absolute loyalty and respect - so profound that even the enemy is deeply moved and filled with admiration. THE BLUE BIRD, by Maurice Maeterlinck, Adapted by Gavin BantockGreat Dramas for Student Actors, Vol. 6 The charming story, which appeals to all ages, of two children's search for the Blue Bird, the symbol of true happiness. A simple dream-fantasy packed with profound thoughts. Dog, Cat, Fire, Water, Bread, Candy and Light all assume human shapes and teach us the true meanings of life. Where and what is the Blue Bird? Is it in the Land of Memory, the Palace of Night, in the dark Forest, or in the Palace of Happinesses? Is it in a Graveyard. Or in the Kingdom of the Future? Or is it to be found in the pure-minded joys and warm-hearted attitudes of life at home? Nothing is what it seems. Death turns into life, selfish pleasure turns into pain; and the Blue Bird seems not to be a real bird at all. CYRANO DE BERGERAC, A Play in Four Acts, by Edmond Rostand, Adapted for student actors by Gavin Bantock The fascinating tale of Cyrano-a witty poet, a skillful swordsman, a noble and romantic lover with a heart of gold, and a brave soldier, struggling against fortune throughout his life because of his oversize nose; and the good-looking young officer Christian, equally brave and romantic, but totally unable to express his feelings in persuasive and charming words. Ajouter au panierPaperback. Etat : new. Paperback. PELLEAS AND MELISANDE, A Play in Two Acts, by Maurice Maeterlinck, Adapted by Gavin BantockGreat Dramas, for Student Actors, Vol. 2 A beautiful Symbolist drama involving a love triangle between Melisande, a delicate nymphlike woman of unknown origin, her somewhat impulsive marriage to Golaud, the grandson of a king, and the intense but pure love that soon develops between her and Golaud's half-brother Pelleas. The play is set at first in a deep forest and then in a huge, decaying castle and its gardens. There is an overall dream-like atmosphere as if the characters are symbols of emotion rather than living human beings who walk and talk; and there is a sense that no one in the play either understands or can control, or escape from, the workings of destiny. It is a play which exactly fits the term Romantic as opposed to Realistic, which somehow aligns it with the guardian spirits of music and the sea. On the realistic level it is simply story of forbidden love, jealousy and anger, ending in murder and the death of the heroine. But Melisande's passing is imbued with beauty rather than sadness, as if she is drifting back to the "otherworld" she came from.
