Anfangsgründe zur Probierkunst, als der Zweyte Theil der practischen Metallurgischen Chimie, worinnen verschiedene neue Arten zuverlässig zu probieren gezeiget werden abgefasst von C. E. Gellert. From 1736 through 1737, he worked as an instructor at the Gymnasium in Petersburg, then he became adjunct at the Akademie der Wissenschaften until 1746. In 1747 he settled in the mining town of Freiberg he held several positions related to the mining and metallurgical industry. At the founding of the Berg-Akademie in 1765, he was appointed professor of metallurgy and chemistry. Gellert introduced the process of cold extraction of precious metals by the use of mercury, a works (the largest of the time) being built in at Halsbruck in 1790" (Minrec). - "Vor allem aber setzte Gellert die Tradition Johann Friedrich Henkels fort und richtete eine private Unterrichtsstätte für metallurgische Chemie ein, die sich bald großer Berühmtheit erfreute und Schüler aus dem In- und Auslande anzog. Für seinen Unterricht stellte er zur Bestimmung von Mineralien bereits eine Tabelle ihrer spezifischen Gewichte mit auch heute noch annehmbaren Werten auf und verfaßte ein Lehrbuch `Anfangsgründe der metallurgischen Chimie` (1750, 21776 [P], französische und italienische Übersetzungen 1758, beziehungsweise 1790). Dessen 1. Teil behandelt die Eigenschaften der Körper und die für die chemischen Arbeiten erforderlichen Geräte; der zweite enthält eine Sammlung von `Aufgaben` und deren `Auflösung`. Aufgrund dieses Werkes erhielt Gellert 1753 die besoldete Tätigkeit als Kommissionsrat mit einem `votum consultativum` beim Oberbergamt in Freiberg, dazu die Aufsicht über die Bergwerksmaschinen und den Auftrag, die Landesmineralien zu untersuchen und die Schmelzprozesse zu prüfen". In this work on the density of alloys he showed that this may be greater or less than the calculated by the mixture rule; it was mostly greater. Gellert attributes this to the exisitance of pores in the metals. He also experimented the magnetism of alloys of iron" (Minrec zur 2.
