The text block and illustrations are in near fine condition with no tears, marks, or dog-ears, but the upper righthand corner is crinkled. There is no bookplate nor signature of a prior owner. This is n…ot a library book nor a remainder. The wraps are in very good condition (upper righthand corner is crinkled). 7 ¼ x 9 ½, 12 pages, 7 ounces. XX [From Texas Highways] In the 1850s, "Jefferson Davis, a senator from Mississippi who would later become president of the Confederacy, thought that as more Americans moved west, camels could be the ideal pack animal to help them. Cross-country rail systems had yet to be constructed, and mules and horses fared poorly when there was scant access to water. Camels thrive in deserts in nearly every other corner of the world; why would the American Southwest be any different? Davis pitched the camel concept to the Senate twice in the early 1850s, but both times it was laughed off the floor. Then, in March 1855, Davis found a way to fund a camel experiment in his role as Secretary of War under President Franklin Pierce. In fine print, he tacked $30,000 to buy camels onto a bill that funded road and bridge repair in Illinois. Davis charged Major Henry Wayne with leading a voyage to the Middle East and North Africa to purchase the camels. Wayne spent nearly a year acquiring camels in modern-day Egypt, Algeria, Tunisia, and Turkey. In May 1856, 34 camels arrived in Texas, landing near modern-day Port Lavaca at what was then the port of Indianola. The Army marched the camels from Indianola to Camp Verde, an outpost in the Hill Country, just south of Kerrville. The original 34 camels were later joined by a second shipment of 41 camels, pushing the Camp Verde camel population to 75. For the next 10 years, the military used the camels to haul military supplies between Camp Verde and San Antonio, which was then the home of the Department of the Army in Texas. The site of old Camp Verde, most of which eventually burned in a fire, is now on private property. Nearby, in the town of Camp Verde, the Camp Verde General Store and Restaurant recalls the local camel history with various camel sculptures on its property.".

The country is not only building more of its first version of such a weapon, the DF-21D, but has developed an anti-ship warhead for another such missile, the more-numerous DF-26, billed as having a 2,500-mile… range - more than enough to hit Guam from several hundred miles inland in China. In theory, that puts any naval adversary at risk long before it is in Chinese waters, let alone within striking distance of China's coastline. That puts US carrier strike groups - a linchpin of US power projection, able to hit any corner of the world at short notice with overwhelming force - in a situation they have never before faced. For years, US war planners took for granted that American naval power could operate unimpeded anywhere on earth and deliver strikes with relative impunity. If a missile can sweep that option off the board, it changes the balance of power not just in Asia, but across the globe. It is a collision of two world-shaking forces: China, the only country to build large numbers of ballistic missiles to threaten enemy fleets, and the United States, the only power on earth with more than a single nuclear-powered aircraft carrier. Neither situation seems likely to change in the near future, putting both countries on what may be a collision course of doctrine and technology. The only way an outside observer will know for certain how well the DF-21D and its successors work is if they are used operationally, in the face of the US Navy's growing array of countermeasures and anti-missile systems. If that happens, the world is either plunging into a catastrophic war, or several chapters deep into one. That makes the development, deployment and threat posed by the DF-21D and China's other ASBMs crucial to study. The outcome of the next great power conflict might hinge upon whether this type of missile truly is a Carrier Killer. AUTHORS: Gerry Doyle is an editor on the Global News Desk at Thomson Reuters.
