Ajouter au panierHardcover. Etat : Very good +. First Edition. Octavo, 290pp., illustrated. Text entirely in German. A nice, clean copy, very good or better, in the publisher's rough-grain burgundy cloth. Binding a touch shaken, but still sound, with the inner hinges intact. Spine gently cocked, slightest rubbing to the corners, but a nice examp…le. Civil War-themed bookplate to the front paste-down. A comprehensive history of this unit full of German-Americans from Cincinnati, many of whom were recent immigrants who spoke little English. As a result, their unit history volume is written in German, and in a traditional schrift typeface, even as it was published in Cincinnati. Their commander was a non-German, Robert L. McCook (one of the family of "Fighting McCooks," mostly from Eastern Ohio, who sent fifteen men to fight in the Union Army). Among their officers was August Willich, a Prussian nobleman who had become a militant communist and participant in the Revolutions of 1848 in Europe. His continued radicalism after the failure of those revolutions brought him to the United States, where he put those same passions to work to fight against American slavery. Nevins: "above average memoirs of service." Ryan: "It is creditably written, and furnishes the historical narrative of the Ninth Ohio Volunteer Infantry in a complete and intersting volume." Scarce in the trade, particularly in fresh, clean, unrestored condition. Nevins I, p. 139; Ryan 796/797; Dornbusch I, Ohio 130.
