He studied at Eastbourne and Maidstone Colleges of Art, graduating in 1971. His work exploits a variety of media, including watercolour, oils, woodcut and dry point etchings. His subjects are mainly wildlife, but also feature domestic animals, and landscape. Robert places great emphasis on sketching in the field and his watercolours are frequently "plein air"; this approach ensures paintings of vitality and authenticity. Elected a Member of the Society of Wildlife Artists [SWLA] in 1981 and has played an active part in the Society ever since. The following year he was elected a member of the Royal Society of British Artists. He is featured in Nicholas Hammond's two books "Twentieth Century Wildlife Artists" (1986, Croom Helm) and "Modern Wildlife Painting" (1998, Pica Press). His work features in numerous publications, and in 2022 he took over the mantle of designing the dust jackets for Collins' famous series on British wildlife - The New Naturalist library. Additionally Robert has worked on a number of collaborative projects drawing attention to threatened areas and habitats.
