La pubblicazione prende le mosse dal libro-intervista di Renzo de Felice, pubblicato nel 1996 e curato dallo storico americano Michael ledeen "Intervista sul fascismo". L' intervista suscitò forti reazioni negative sia dalla storiografia marxista/comunista che De Felice critica per il suo conformismo, sia da parte di alcuni intellettuali e storici di destra. La storiografia marxista e comunista reagì all'Intervista con il volume curato da Nicola Tranfaglia "Fascismo e capitalismo" pubblicato nel 1976. Gli autori dei saggi contenuti in quelvolume rappresentavano i massimi esponenti della storiografia di sinistra italiana e appartenevano a generazioni diverse dai più anziani Alatri, Quazza, Carocci nati nel primo dopoguerra, ai più giovani Rochat, Castronovo e lo stesso Tranfaglia, inoltre vi era il coetaneo di De Felice, Enzo Collotti. Le critiche da destra al libro intervista di Renzo De Felice vennero invece raccolte nel volume "Sei risposte a Renzo De Felice" pubblicato dalla casa editrice Giovanni Volpe editore nel 1976 i cui saggi furono scritti da Bardèche, Eisermann, Errra, Freund, il Testimone anonimo pseudonimo di Giovanni Volpe e lo scienziato politico americano James Gregor.…
