Grundlage dieses Vergleichs ist zunächst eine Analyse der Sport- sowie Bildungssysteme beider Länder. Im späteren Vergleich sollen die Zielebene sowie die Inhaltsebene der curricularen Lehrpläne ausgewählter Bundesstaaten beziehungsweise Bundesländer einen Einblick in die theoretischen Inhalte des Sportunterrichtes geben. 'Der Schulsport ist ein unverzichtbarer Bestandteil umfassender Bildung und Erziehung' (Kultusministerkonferenz, 2005): so heißt es in Absatz 1 der gemeinsamen Erklärung der Präsidentin der Kultusministerkonferenz, des Präsidenten des DSB und des Vorsitzenden der Sportministerkonferenz aus dem Jahr 2005 und bezieht sich somit auf die zentrale Aufgabe des Schulsportes in Deutschland. Dieser bildet neben dem Vereinssport eine wichtige Säule zur sportlichen Entwicklung von Kindern und Jugendlichen und wird somit als wichtiger Übergang zum gesundheitsorientierten, breitensportlichen oder leistungsorientierten Sport angesehen. Kern des Schulsportes ist der Sportunterricht, der (in Deutschland) auf inhaltlicher und methodischer Ebene so aufgebaut werden soll, dass er alle teilnehmenden Schüler auf gleicher Weise fördert und erreicht sowie wichtige überfachliche Bildungs- und Erziehungsaufgaben wie z.B. Gesundheitsförderung, Werteerziehung und soziales Lernen vermittelt (Kultusministerkonferenz, 2005, S. 2). Über die Bedeutung, Entwicklung und Umsetzung des Schulsportes in Deutschland liegen schier endlose Arbeiten und Studien verschiedenster Autoren vor, womit erneut der Wert des Schulsportes in Deutschland verdeutlicht wird. Doch welche Bedeutung hat der Sportunterricht im bildungspolitischen Kontext eines Landes, in dem der Sport einen anderen gesellschaftlichen Stellenwert hat und wie wird dieser im Praxis umgesetzt Die Rede ist hier von den Vereinigten Staaten von Amerika, einer Nation, die nicht nur als eine der erfolgreichsten Nationen im internationalen Vergleich gilt, sondern in deren Sprachgebrauch und gesellschaftlichen Wertschätzung Sport eine differenzierte Bedeutung erlangt hat und in deren historischen Entwicklung nicht zuletzt die 'US.-Sports' Football, Basketball und Baseball einen eingehen Marktentstehen ließen, der heute ein enormes kommerzielles Interesse bedient.
