This book consists of 3 parts and is extensively illustrated with engravings, pedigrees, seals and antiquities. Very good in full leather binding, with gilt designs, which has been expertly recased…. Containing an A.L.S. from one of the author's children, to a subscriber, informing him of his father's death that morning at half past three. He is said to have died peacefully in the letter with Wikipedia stating that followed a fall from a ladder in his library. The letter is tipped in to the verso of the ffep. A.E.G. Association copy with inscript.

Matthew Gregson (17491824), antiquary, copiled a Portfolio of Fragments relative to the History and Antiquities of the County Palatine and Duchy of Lancaster, which he brought out in 1817 in three folio parts. The second and enlarged edition is dated 1824, and the third, edited and indexed by John… Harland, came out in 1867. This work led to his election as a fellow of the Society of Antiquaries, and to his honorary membership of the Newcastle-on-Tyne Society of Antiquaries. He was offered knighthood by the Prince Regent on presenting a copy of the book, but declined the dignity. He often wrote on antiquarian subjects in the Gentleman's Magazine.

Green cloth boards, gilt lettering to spine, gilt heraldic roundel to front cover. Bevelled edges. 13.75ins x 9.25ins, xii,…426pp, 2pp book adverts plus frontis portrait, folding map of the county and 19pp plates (one folding) as listed. There are also other illustrations within the text. A great deal of emphasis is placed on the genealogical side of the history and there are innumerable crests and coats of arms plus two folding pedigrees. Internally the book is very good. Externally original spine has been relaid, with just a tiny bit of loss to the top of the spine. New endpapers. Firmly bound. Overall, this is a good, sound volume containing a wealth of data for the genealogist or family historian. Nb heavy book (2.9kg pre-packing) please contact seller for postage quote.
