Brossura. Etat : nuovo. Evelyn Mullally (ed). Pages: 180 p. NEW. Paperback. Illustrations:2 b/w. Language(s):English, Middle French. Brepols, Publication Year:2015 - SUMMARY In 1434 Guillebert from Geraardsbergen completed his description of Paris. It is a remarkable record of what was considered noteworthy at the time both historically and topographically. There are picturesque details which are often cited in annotations to the poetry of Francois Villon, notably concerning the Cemetery of the Innocents, the depiction of the Virgin and of heaven and hell in the Celestines and the reference to the famous beauties of the city. The author was an innkeeper and town councillor in his native Geraardsbergen, but also a profssional scribe involved in the book trade who was a 'libraire' for Philip the Good, Duke of Burgundy. The unique manuscript that contains this text also features an important illlustration by an otherwise unknown artist. A whole group of fifteenth-century Flemish manuscript illuminators is now associated with this master, who was given in 1915 the title 'Master of Guillebert De Mets'. TABLE OF CONTENTS Introductory matter: the Work, the Author, the Sources, the Editions, the Manuscripts, Language, Patronage, the Administration of Medieval Paris, the Churches, the University of Paris, the Streets, Five 'Grands Bourgeois'. Text and rejected readings. Translation and notes. Bibliography.…

Taschenbuch. Etat : Neu. nach der Bestellung gedruckt Neuware - Printed after ordering - 'In Old Paris' presents five descriptions of the city from 1323 to 1790. These include A Treatise of the Praises of Paris by Jean de Jandun (1323), The Description of the City of Paris by Guillebert de Mets (1407-34), A Description of Paris by the Venetian Ambassador's Secretary (1577-79), Giovanni Paolo Marana's Pleasant Critique of Paris (1692) and Letters from Paris by the Russian traveller Nikolai Mikhailovich Karamzin (1790). Paris was changed forever by the upheaval of the French Revolution during the last decade of the eighteenth century and by the physical transformation of the city in the mid-nineteenth. Old Paris does survive, however, in many of its architectural monuments and also in these fascinating urban descriptions by residents of, and visitors to, the city. This volume includes a select bibliography on Parisian history, urbanism and architecture; an architectural gazetteer; an appendix on the size and population of Paris from the fourteenth to the eighteenth century; a glossary, and an index.…
