Ukrainan murrosajoilta - Kuusi kuukautta lähetystön päällikkönä Kievissä julkaistiin ensimmäisen kerran 1931. Gummerus toimi Suomen itsenäisyyttä ajavana aktivistina ja oli Venäjästä eroon halunneiden vähemmistökansojen yhteistoimintamies. Suomen itsenäistyttyä hän oli vt. lähetysneuvos Tukholmassa, mistä hänet määrättiin Kiovaan ja sieltä edelleen Roomaan. Diplomaatin uran jälkeen Gummerus palasi 1926 opettajaksi ja tutkijaksi. Hän oli 1900-luvun alussa merkittävä antiikin Rooman talous- ja sosiaalihistorian tutkija. Sittemmin hän toimi Helsingin yliopistossa historian professorina.
