Quarto, 9 3/4" tall, illustrated wraps, approx. 160 pages + ads. An otherwise very good, clean, sturdy issue of this key literary magazine of its age, with minor shelf wear, rubbing and chipping at the spine corners. BUT, the primary defect is that the back cover is missing--covers were issued oversized to the interior stock and thus the edges appear roughed, but this is true of all copies for the same reason; interior binding tight, paper lightly yellowed.…

This was published during a several-year time period when the Sierra Club did not stipulate the month of an issue, just the volume, the number, and the year- monthly designations for such an infrequent publication having always been somewhat unnecessary in any case. Original printed wrappers, 9 1/4" x 6 1/4", 102 pp. + unpaginated photographic plates, features and ads, including a plate fold-out with two panoramic wide angles, from Mount Hamilton, by William H. Wright. Very Good plus, really quite close to near fine; the major flaw being the common one that circuit binding (yapp binding) was used, in which cover edges were intentionally extended out beyond page edges, but over time the extended part becomes pressed inward somewhat (see scan). One notable rear-cover chip at top, about 1" x 1.5". Otherwise, just occasional very small points of cover wear. A very handsome copy. See scans. Binding sturdy, contents fine. In addition to the graphics mentioned above, this issue is chock full of photographic plates by the club's best photographers, as well as others. Moore was co-founder and president of the Society for Popular Astronomy and published a number of significant works on astronomy, however remains most famous for having been the permanent host of the BBC television series The Sky at Nightfrom 1957 until his death in 2012. HisPractical Amateur Astronomy seeks to encourage other serious amateurs to devote themselves to the field and includes specific chapters on astronomical recording, lunar observation, the Aurora, and radio astronomy. Full bound in the original publisher's paper wraps. Externally, very excellent with just a touch of bumping to the head and tail of the spine and to the extremities. Wrapper is lightly age toned with a few minor handling marks to its rear and some edgewear, including a few closed tears. Internally, firmly bound.
