Ajouter au panierHardcover. Etat : Very good. Format is approximately 9.5 inches by 11.5 inches. [4], xxv, [1], 736, [4] pages. Illustrations. Bibliographical List of Boon on the National Capital. Index. Some discoloration inside the covers and on endpapers. Hans Paul Caemmerer was the first civilian secretary of the U.S. Commission of Fine Arts. He had a master's degree in art and archaeology from George Washington University, a law degree from Georgetown University, and a doctorate from American University. He joined the Commission of Fine Arts as a clerk and assistant in 1919. H. P. Caemmerer remained with the commission for more than thirty years; during this time, he wrote several books on the history of Washington, D.C., including Washington: The National Capital and A Manual on the Origin and Development of Washington. He was affiliated with the Archaeological Institute of America, the Columbia Historical Society, the American Federation of the Arts. Excerpt: Several years ago the writer was persuaded by authorities in Washington to undertake the writing of a history of the development of the National Capital. About the same time a similar request from a Cornell University professor expressed the need of a history of the plan of the National Capital for use in teaching a course in the history of landscape architecture in the College of Architecture at that university. However, the writing of the book was held in abeyance until the great public buildings program which is now under way had taken such definite form that the history of the National Capital could be written with an assurance that the plan would actually be carried out. The $400,000,000 which Congress has authorized during the past four years for the development of the District of Columbia is evidence that the program as now outlined will be completed, and another decade will witness the transformation of Washington into the greatest and most beautiful National Capital in the world. Presumed First Edition, First printing thus.…
