Ajouter au panierHardcover. Etat : Near Fine. Near Fine. Revised Edition. Pictorial map endpages; 8vo 8" - 9" tall; 188 pages; 22 cm. Facsimile reissue of the Westminster Press first edition of 1947, with a new introduction by the author's son, R. Christopher Goodwin. Title page dated 2003, but the introduction is dated January 28, 2004, so the book was issued in 2004 or later. Published by Spindrift Island Publications with AmericanWeb Books, a small fan venture that printed Rick Brant titles and related books to subscriber pre-order; copies are seldom seen. The introduction draws on Goodwin's correspondence with the Westminster Press to tell how the book was commissioned as the first of a Hawaiian trilogy, why the sequels were abandoned, and how its young hero, John Blaine, gave Goodwin the pseudonym of the Rick Brant series. Orange cloth reproducing the dark green pictorial title design of the original binding, in a faithful reproduction of the original dust jacket. The pictorial map endpapers of the first edition are not reproduced. A tight, fresh copy. NF/NF.…

With grayscale reproductions of Ralph Crosby Smith's illustrations from the original serial. First book publication of Hal Goodwin's Hawaiian adventure serial, first printed in the Parents' Magazine comic "Calling All Boys" in four parts, Nos. 7 to 10, September 1946 to March 1947, so that its magazine appearance preceded both "The Feathered Cape" and the first Rick Brant books. With a preface and dedication by Rick Brant collector Jim Ogden, dated 2010, and published by Jim Towey's The Adventure Continues of West Granby, Connecticut, a reprint venture for series-book collectors whose advertisements appear at the end and describe print runs as small as 25 copies. The preface links the story to "The Feathered Cape", whose hero Jonathan Blaine, shortened to John Blaine, supplied Goodwin's pseudonym for the Rick Brant series. Publisher's red cloth, spine lettered in black, apparently issued without a dust jacket. Tight and fresh. About Fine.…

Ajouter au panierHardcover. Etat : Near Fine. Etat de la jaquette : Very Good+. First Edition. Pictorial map endpages; 8vo 8" - 9" tall; 188 pages; 22 cm. First edition. Publisher's bright orange cloth with title and pictorial design stamped in dark green, pictorial map endpapers of the Hawaiian Islands. With a four-page glossary of Hawaiian names and terms. Hal Goodwin's Hawaiian novel, published by the Westminster Press in 1947 just before his first Rick Brant book, and the source of his pseudonym: its young Yankee hero, taken off an American ship by the British and befriended by Kamehameha the Great, is John Blaine. The story builds to the Battle of Nu'uanu of 1795. According to the author's son, R. Christopher Goodwin, in his introduction to the fan-published reissue, the book was commissioned by Westminster editor Bill Heyliger as the first of a Hawaiian trilogy, contracted in 1945 under the working title "Island Kingdom" and rewritten by Heyliger to Goodwin's lasting displeasure. Westminster did little to promote it, surviving royalty statements show payments of under $25 a year, and the book was out of production by March 1952. The planned sequels gave way to Rick Brant. Snugly bound and very neat; publisher's green top stain bold and uniform. Mild shelf rubbing to the corner tips. In the original color pictorial dust jacket illustrated by Ursula Koering, unclipped with the $2.00 price on the front flap. Jacket very slightly sunned at the spine, with a few tiny nicks and chips along the edges. An unusually attractive copy of a book with a short life and a small sale. A near fine copy in a very good plus jacket.…
