The University of Wyoming American Heritage Center has mounted a 'traveling exhibit' of watercolours and diaries from Kennet Were's 1868-9 journey across the United States, a long account of which he published in the Gazette ('Nine Months in the United States') on his return. Were's obituary in the Transactions of the Devonshire… Association, vol. 48, (1916), p. 54, describes him as one of Sidmouth's 'most respected inhabitants' and 'the prime mover in movements for the improvement of the resort and a supporter of all good causes', but does not refer to his artistic activities. These two items predate the American trip, and relate to Were's chartering of a boat, at some expense, for a trip up the Nile, presumably with a view to writing an account and making drawings. ONE: Headed: 'It is this day agreed between Messrs Fairman & Co., and T. Kennet Were Esqre:'. An extensive eight-point manuscript agreement (thirty-seven lines of close text) to charter 'the Nile boat "Collen Bawn" of about 200 Ardebs, Reis [gap] Master' for £350, 'for a voyage up the river Nile' lasting four months. Dated: 'Alexandria, this 9th day of December. 1864'. Signed 'T Kennet Were.' (The agreement is not in his hand.) With signed certification by 'J[ohn]. R[oper]. Norrish / Chief Clerk' to the British Consul at Alexandria (with official stamp). At the bottom of the second page is a receipt for the balance, dated 17 April 1865, 'pp. Kelson Hankey & Cie. / A. Brethouwer / Successors of Mess Fairman & Co's business'. 3pp, foolscap 8vo. Bifolium, folded once. A brittle item, on somewhat discoloured paper, with slight wear along the outer edge of the first leaf, but the text is clear and entire. Note on reverse of second leaf: 'Egypt 1865-5 / Agreement with P Sapienza / Dragoman / Agreement for Dehabeah / List of [Bird Skins?]'. TWO. Printed 'FAIRMAN & CO.' receipt, completed in manuscript. Dated from Alexandria, Egypt, 9 December 1864. Signed 'p Fairman & Co / C Lombardott': 'One hundred and seventy five pounds sterling' received from 'T. Kenneth Were', in account of 'Dahabia's rent as p contract of today's date'. In fair condition, aged and worn. The two documents were pinned together.

Packet of six items, held together with a pin. Totalling 8pp., folio; 3pp., 8vo. In good overall condition, on aged and worn paper. ONE: Autograph Letter Signed from 'Wm: R: Myers | Secy' to Messrs Thomson Hankey & Co, London. Executive Committee Office; 26 December 1855. 2pp., folio. Giving details of five documents which he is… forwarding, 'on the Chairs received from Messrs. Druce & Co'. He writes that he is 'directed to communicate through you, that the Chairs are not accepted and will not be paid for, but will be kept on the account and risk of Messrs. Druce & Co.', who have 'expressly treated you as agents'. He continues: 'I am also to inform you of the receipt with most perfect order of the Lamps, Shades, and all appliances - not one of the glasses or shades is broken or cracked, or injured - which, especially with reference to the condition of the Chairs shipped by the same vessel, is very remarkable - and shews the advantage of good packing and the consequences of bad - in strong contrast. The circumstance will be viewed as one of much force and effect, in the matter with Messrs. Druce & Co.' Covering sheet by Thomson Hankey & Co., reading: '44 | 26th Decr. 1855 | Exect. Committee | Rec'd 17 Jany /56'. From the archive of Thomson Hankey & Co, London. Druce & Co. had been founded by Thomas Charles Druce (now remembered for the Druce/Portland affair) a few years before. The business flourished until its extensive premises (known as 'the Baker Street Baazar') were bombed out during the Second world War.

2pp., 4to. Bifolium. Addressed on reverse of second leaf 'To | John Hankey Esqr'. In fair condition, on aged and worn paper. An unusually forthright document in the staid world of Georgian banking, the letter begins: 'Sir | We have received the favor of your Letter dated yesterday with much surprize, not only as it informs us of… a praemium being offer'd with an acceptance of your house, but also as it seems to intimate that it has been done with our concurrence - we can assure you, Sir, that your Letter is the only information we have had upon this subject - the bill, it is true, is in our hands, and we have Lord St John's directions to deliver it to a person who is to pay a Sum of money into his account but we are perfectly ignorant from what that money is to arise'. Further instructions from Lord St John are required, 'before the person calls for the bill'. From the Hankey & Co. banking archive.
