Not simply a textual complement to the exhibition but also an unusual combine of art works, this book is much more than just a documentation of an exhibition, it's an exhibition in book form. In spite of its classical design and hardcover binding, it is an artists' book with a truly unusual use of texts and reprints. The book will also feature sections with visual reminders and references for all of the 4th berlin biennial activities including Checkpoint Charley, Gagosian Gallery in Berlin, and the columns presented by the bb4 in Zitty magazine." -- publisher's statement. Hardcover. Etat : Very Good. 2020 OUP hardcover edition. Light reading wear else very good condition. Pseudepigrapha Latina offers a new series of modern commentaries on frequently neglected, falsely attributed, and anonymous Latin texts. The individual commentaries engage with questions of authorship and dating, traditional philological issues and style, as well as the literary context of these works. This volume takes as its starting point the appendices attached to three major Augustan poets, exploring how different conditions of production and the differences between their authorizing authors result in different notions of what an appendical text 'ought' to be. Vergil's biography, for instance, leaves ample room for 'juvenilia', while Ovid's does not; the Tibullan appendix, meanwhile, explicitly engages with a wider poetic community. Moving beyond questions of forgery and deception, some chapters ask how we would be able to tell the difference between texts of genuine and of disputed authorship, since most of the stylistic features that distinguish authors are replicable. Other chapters make the case for re-evaluation of poems that have been neglected or disparaged, and still others make sense of individual works in their likely contexts of composition. This volume is the first to treat in conjunction the majority of the appendical works ascribed to these authors, and to draw connections across corpora. In a larger sense, the volume questions how canons are formed and re-formed, challenging readers to move towards a broader notion of reception studies that decentres the very notions of masterpiece and genius and allows for multiple modes of engagement with canonical works. Contents: Authoring, reading, and exploring an Appendix: some introductory thoughts by T. E. Franklinos and Laurel Fulkerson 1. Scylla's lament in the Ciris and the Latin literary tradition by Antony Augoustakis 2. The mythical antecedents of the Ciris by Laurel Fulkerson 3. Author and audience in Catalepton by Joseph Farrell 4. Construing the author as a Catullan reader in the pure iambic Catalepton (6, 10, 12) by T. E. Franklinos 5. Catalepton 9 and Valgius Rufus by Boris Kayachev 6. Echoing Virgil and Narcissus: structure and interpretation of the Culex by Andrew Laird 7. Volcanic wonder: a starry-eyed view of the Aetna by Gareth Williams 8. Teaching the death of elegy: the elegies of Lygdamus ([Tib.] 3.1-6) by Giuseppe La Bua 9. Tibullan impersonation and Callimachean influence in the Messalla Panegyric ([Tib.] 3.7) by Robert Maltby 10. The authorship of Tibullus 3.9: methods and criteria by Jacqueline Fabre-Serris 11.
