Paperback. Etat : Good. Reclaiming the Teaching Profession gives educators (especially teachers and future teachers) and their allies a clear overview of the massive effort to dismantle public education in the United States, which includes a direct attack on teachers. The book details, and provides a systematic critique of, the shaky assumptions at the foundation of the market-based reform initiatives that dominate the contemporary education scene. It names and exposes the motives and methods of the powerful philanthropists, politicians, business moguls, and education entrepreneurs who are behind the reform movement. It provides counter narratives that public school advocates can use to talk back to those who would destroy the teaching profession and public education. It includes examples of successful acts of resistance and identifies resources for challenging reformers' taken for granted primacy in the education debate. It concludes with strategies educators can use to speak truth to power, reclaim their professional status, and reshape the education landscape in ways that serve all of America's children and preserve our democracy.…

Paperback. Etat : Very Good. *** The revised edition of Love Sung is available. Now each daily read includes a journal page for notes. *** How would your life change if you knew for certain who you truly are, what you are called to do, and where you are called to be? What if you removed the desire to become somebody because you knew without a doubt that you already are somebody? What if you knew you were loved? Like really loved. Not based on your behavior, but based on your position as a child of a King? What if God is waiting for you to be the real you. the one He created you to be, so He could call you into your next adventure? What if He is waiting to spend time with you, listening for your voice so He can respond to your real needs in His perfect love and amazing grace? You are born with a song within you, uniquely yours, created by God, restored in you by Jesus, and designed to be sung out by you in partnership with the work of the Holy Spirit in your life. Your song cries out to be heard; by God and by those around you. Love Sung is a 31 day devotional journal. It tackles the topic of identity in Christ by inviting you, the reader, into a deeper conversation with the Holy Spirit, who communicates with us the truth of who we are in Love. Love Sung is nothing more than a tool to start a conversation. A conversation that many so desperately desire, yet have been told that it's out of reach because of their past. The world has had its say in who you are up to this point. Why not take a moment or two and hear who your Creator says you are? Once you see, believe, and receive the truth about who you already are in Christ, you will have Love Sung through you. The world needs to hear your song, because your song is His song in you. Are you ready to sing it out.…

Hardback. Etat : Fair. Hatch packs a wealth of knowledge into the book.poignant. -Associated Press Dr. Steven Hatch, an infectious disease specialist, first came to Liberia in November 2013 to work at a hospital in Monrovia. Six months later, several of the physicians he had served with were dead or unable to work, and Ebola had become a world health emergency. Inferno is his account of the epidemic that nearly consumed a nation, as well as its deeper origins. Hatch returned with the aid organization International Medical Corps to help establish an Ebola Treatment Unit. Alongside a devoted staff of expats and Liberians in a hastily constructed facility nestled into the jungle, Hatch witnessed the unit's physicians, nurses, other caregivers, and patients selflessly helping others, preserving hope in the face of fear, and maintaining dignity across the divide of health and illness. And, over repeated visits during the course of the outbreak, Hatch came to understand the Ebola catastrophe not only as a contagious virus but as a product of Liberia's violent history and America's role in it. Powerful and clear-eyed, Inferno not only explores a deadly virus and an afflicted country, but also reveals how the Ebola outbreak stoked nativist anxieties that were exploited for political gain in the United States and around the world. In telling one doctor's story, Inferno demonstrates how generations of inequality left Liberia vulnerable to crisis, and how similar circumstances might fuel another plague elsewhere. By understanding and alleviating those circumstances, Hatch writes, we may help smother the fire next time.…

Paperback. Etat : Good. Excerpt: .works and spoke of having already receaved a good proofe thereof by iron sent from there. This might have been small comfort for the 4,000 which had been spent already. In May, 1621, realizing that a replacement for Bluett was needed, the Company entered into an agreement with John Berkeley, sometimes of Beverstone Castle in the County of Glocester (a gentleman of honourable familie), as Master & over-seer of the works at the site called The falling Creeke. He agreed to take himself, his son Maurice, three servants from his private family and twenty workmen. These would include eight for the furnace (two founders, two keepers, two filers and two carpenters) and twelve others (four finers, two servants, two chaffery men, two hammer men and two servants). He would get 30 toward furnishing his personal group, plus their transportation, and 20 to cover the assembly of the workmen. The twenty workmen, to be bound for seven years of service to the Company, would be transported and victualled as other tenantes for one whole yeare at the Companies charge. Letters were dispatched to the Colony urging special care and Pg 59 attention for this new company made up of Berkeley and his ging. Berkeley evidently felt that the Falling Creek site was ideal for wood, water, mines and stone. His letters indicated that he expected to be producing good quantities of iron by the late spring of 1622. He envisioned much more for the now 5,000 investment than the disparagingly reported return of a fire shovell and tonges and a little barre of iron made by a bloomery. He, however, did not expect the massacre. The Indians swept down on the ironworks community and left twenty-seven dead as well as considerable destruction to the works. The dead included John Berkeley, a mason, two wives, three children and Joseph Fitch Apothecary to Doctor Pots. This was the end of the project although the Company demonstrated, for a time, its intention to.…

Paperback. Etat : Very Good. Ruben Palmer is on every woman's Christmas wish list. Except mine. I grew up with him and bested him in practically everything we did together-debate, grades, mini-golf, you name it. So I've built an immunity to his boy-next-door charm. Sure, sometimes I might accidentally type his name into my search engine, but his dimples, hotel empire and thirst-trap photos don't tempt me. I've got my sights set on earning my way to the top of the Palmer Hotel empire, and nothing is going to get in my way.Until my step-sister leaves her secret toddler with me before skipping town for three months. Now suddenly everyone thinks he's mine, and instead of powering my way to the top, I'm struggling to not get fired. And instead of Ruben staying on the executive floor where he belongs, he's invading my apartment, breaking dates with starlets, and looking disappointed that I decided to settle down with anyone except him.But I know Ruben, and Ruben doesn't settle down. So there's no way I'm giving him my heart. Not even for Christmas.**One Small Secret is inspired by the classic films, Bachelor Mother and Bundle of Joy, and is part of the Gift-Wrapped Romance series. All five cozy Christmas novels can be read in any order.Cabin Crush by Kasey StocktonMerry Kismet by Anneka R. Paperback. Etat : Fair. UPDATED IN 2020 Dr. Allison McWilliams has hit the nail right on the head and provides focused, effective and actionable ideas for recent college grads who are getting too much inspiration and too little useable help addressing the substantial challenge of building their lives after college. Much of the literature for this audience patronizingly over-compliments them (You are amazing and can do anything ') or over-criticizes them (Today's young adults are so entitled - they're impossible ). Neither of these categorizations is accurate or helpful - quite the opposite. Dr. McWilliams distills her substantial experience in working in some of the most advanced career-preparatory institutions in the country well by picking five key areas for grads to focus their efforts in building a life they own and can love. Her assessments of what's needed directly complements our decade-plus of work in the Stanford Life Design Lab. Her counsel spans the wide swath of necessary critical skills ranging from forming deep habits of personal reflection to navigating the tactical constraints of that tough first job out of college many grads will get. She tells it like it is without making assumptions or judgments about her reader and balances artfully conversing with her reader and challenging them via exercises to do the work. Like Dr. McWilliams, our team believes that successfully journeying those first five years after graduation (and defining what success is wisely ) is terrifically important. If you love anyone who is currently or about to be in those five years, do them the kindness of giving them this book. Dave Evans, Co-Author, New York Times #1 Bestseller Designing Your Life, and Co-Founder, Stanford Life Design Lab Young adults making their way from college to life-after-college face a multitude of decisions, challenges, and opportunities. How do you build skills and experiences that will benefit you in the future, when you are on the lowest rung of the professional ladder, or in a job that doesn't seem to be going anywhere? How do you balance creating a life with professional demands when your time is not your own? How do you ensure you are practicing self-care - physically, mentally, financially, and emotionally - when you don't know what the resources are to do that? How do you build community and find friends? How do you build your network and find mentors? And, how do you take ownership for what comes next? These and many others are the questions that all young professionals should be asking themselves, especially in the critical first five years out of college. This is the time when you will discover more about yourself than at any other point in your life. You will discover strengths, interests, and beliefs that will guide your future career and life decisions. You will learn professional and life skills and habits that will be the foundation for your future professional selves. You will begin to discern what matters to you, and begin to define what a meaningful life looks like, for you. And, you largely will be expected to do all of this work on your own. Where do you begin? FIVE FOR YOUR FIRST FIVE is based on twenty years of experience working with college students and young adults as they make this sometimes challenging and overwhelming transition from college to life-after-college. It combines real-life stories and experiences, from young adults who have already navigated through these waters, with tools, strategies, discussion, and reflection questions. The reader is encouraged to do real, intentional work while exploring the five key areas: Do the Work, Build a Life, Create Community, Practice Reflection, and Own What's Next. Part workbook, part wise counselor and mentor, FIVE FOR YOUR FIRST FIVE provides meaningful insight into what can happen when you truly take ownership for your career and life. Beam, Lauren R. (illustrateur).…
