Hardback. Etat : New. Based on more than a half-century of research, Herman Melville's Whaling Years is an essential work for Melville scholars. In meticulous and thoroughly documented detail, it examines one of the most stimulating periods in the great author's life--the four years he spent aboard whaling vessels in the Pacific during the early 1840s. Melville would later draw repeatedly on these experiences in his writing, from his first successful novel, Typee, through his masterpiece Moby-Dick, to the poetry he wrote late in life.During his time in the Pacific, Melville served on three whaling ships, as well as on a U.S. Navy man-of-war. As a deserter from one whaleship, he spent four weeks among the cannibals of Nukahiva in the Marquesas, seeing those islands in a relatively untouched state before they were irrevocably changed by French annexation in 1842. Rebelling against duty on another ship, he was held as a prisoner in a native calaboose in Tahiti. He prowled South American ports while on liberty, hunted giant tortoises in the Galapagos Islands, and explored the islands of Eimeo (Moorea) and Maui. He also saw the Society and Sandwich (Hawaiian) Islands when the Western missionary presence was at its height.Heflin combed the logbooks of any ship at sea at the time of Melville's voyages and examined nineteenth-century newspaper items, especially the marine intelligence columns, for mention of Melville's vessels. He also studied British consular records pertaining to the mutiny aboard the Australian whaler Lucy Ann, an insurrection in which Melville participated and which inspired his second novel, Omoo.Distilling the life's work of a leading Melville expert into book form for the first time, this scrupulously edited volume is the most in-depth account ever published of Melville's years on whaleships and how those singular experiences influenced his writing.…

First edition; 9 1/2 x 6; pp. 2-32; self-wraps, newprint stock, printed in black; some age-toning and offsetting to upper margin (not affecting readability); very good condition. An anti-Catholicism and anti-Hearst speech, it was delivered by James Thomas Heflin, aka "Cotton Tom" (1869 - 1951) - Democratic Congressman and US Senator from Alabama. He was also, purportedly, a member of the KKK, a vehement anti-Catholic proponent, and was credited with coining the term Yellow Dog Democrat. William Randolph Hearst (1863 - 1951) - politician, businessman, and newspaper magnate - and his sensatonalistic yellow journalism were said to have greatly-influenced the nation's media by focusing on human interest stories. One example of the effects of said journalism was evident during the Cuban revolt against Spain and the consequential Spanish-American War. Favoring American involvment, Hearst played up sympathy for the Cubans and loathing for the Spanish in his journals. His hope was realized with President McKinley's declaration of war against Spain in 1898. Some years later, in 1927, another accidental effect of Hearst's continued actions emerged, when his newspapers published unchecked, forged documents, which alleged that various US senators had been bribed with more than a million dollars to support a Central-American plot to start a war with the US. One of the accused senators was Hon. J. Thomas Heflin. OCLC lists 2 copies at institutions; none in the trade at time of cataloging.…

Etat : Very Good. On offer is a fascinating, original typed letter signed [TLS] on United State Senate letterhead signed J. Thos. Heflin dated May 20th 1932. The letter returned to him by the Post Office due to the wrong address of Mr. John L. Waldron of Garden City New York who Heflin in this brief letter reveals his bitterness succinctly as writes about Congress giving him a "raw deal on his political contest. The vote was not open the law and the evidence, it was under the lash of Alfred Smith and Raskob". He continues by claiming that a reporter believes he is being punished for 'bolting' Smith in 1928 and more. Overall VG. Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. Manuscript.…
