A view of Commodore Perry's fleet at anchor in Napha, Lew Chew, (Ryukyu) Japan, prepared for the official account "Narrative of the Expedition of an American Squadron to the China Seas and Japan.". The expedition visited the then independent kingdom of Lew Chew (Ryukyu) in 1854, where famously Perry signed a trade agreement on July 11th. In 1875 Japan posted a military garrison in Lew Chew, annexing the Islands in 1879. Perry's Narrative dwells on all aspects of Lew Chew life, with keen interest in their commerce and manufactured goods.
