From the Dust Jacket: "This is the first book to examine fracture mechanics essentially from an applied mechanics approach. It gives the reader an in-depth, systematic introduction to the concepts and formulas of fracture mechanics, showing how to apply these concepts to practical situations. Important parameters relating to cracking and failure are introduced through a deductive process in Chapter 2, deriving relevant field properties in cracked bodies using simple concepts of elasticity and plasticity. Energy balance and hypotheses for cracking are discussed in Chapters 3 and 4, focusing on criteria of cracking and the means to predict the continued slow growth of a crack. Chapter 5 examines the concepts of dynamics that relate to catastrophic failures, reviewing important wave properties and field concepts involved in fast cracking of brittle bodies. Chapter 6, 'Fatigue,' considers basic parameters of action and material strength, showing through conjecture and verification how these factors may predict failure by crack growth in a cyclic regime.".
