J. wurde 1874 Konzertmeister an der Komischen Oper (Ringtheater), 1878 Professor für Violine am Wiener Konservatorium sowie Sologeiger der Hofoper. Nach zeitweiliger Rückkehr ans Ringtheater wirkte er von 1884 bis 1903 wieder im Hofopernorchester und trat 1900 die Nachfolge Gustav Mahlers als Dirigent der Wiener Philharmoniker an. Sein kompositorisches Schaffen umfaßt Lieder, Tänze und Ballette, vor allem aber Operetten. - Mit gedr. Briefkopf "Hofkapellmeister Hellmesberger".
