Paperback. Etat : New. Print on Demand. This book examines whether and in what ways a territorial sovereign could be subject to feudal nexus under the Holy Roman Empire. Many scholars, medieval and contemporary, have argued that supreme authority is inherently incompatible with feudal ties. However, the author meticulously demonstrates that these disparate conditions frequently coexisted throughout the history of the Empire. The author begins with a brief overview of the decline and eventual dissolution of the Holy Roman Empire, emphasizing how the constituent prince-electors and other imperial states progressively asserted their autonomy and territorial authority. Subsequently, the discussion turns to the Rhenish Confederation, a short-lived political entity established by Napoleon in 1806, which played a pivotal role in modifying the relationship between feudalism and territorial sovereignty. The author then delves into the specific question of feudal nexus by carefully analyzing relevant provisions of the Holy Roman Empire's fundamental legal texts. The examination reveals that these documents do not categorically preclude feudal relationships among sovereign princes. The author supports this interpretation by citing numerous historical examples of such arrangements. The book concludes by addressing the potential implications of the author's findings for present-day international relations. The author argues that the historical evidence suggests that feudal ties and supreme authority are not necessarily mutually exclusive and that this insight may have significant implications for understanding modern geopolitical dynamics.
