Ajouter au panierPaperback. Etat : New. Print on Demand. This book details the establishment of an irregular corps during the Matabeleland Rebellion of 1896 when the Matabele people rose up in revolt against British authority in Rhodesia and sought to exterminate all white settlers. The author was tasked with raising, equipping, and dispatching 500 mounted men to relieve and assist an overwhelmed and besieged force in Bulawayo. The author describes the recruitment of volunteers, the acquisition of horses and equipment, and the organization, training, and transportation of the corps. The book provides a unique and detailed account of the challenges and complexities of mounting an expeditionary force in the late 19th century and sheds light on the realities of warfare and the complexities of colonial rule in southern Africa during this period. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.

This particular map shows faint cracking at seams, and a small red stain, but is fully intact. Note:On the List of Maps, Plans, &.c." on pp. vii, there appears an error in calling for a mapl depicting the route from Macloutsi to Mangwe. The folding map actually depicts the route from Macloutsi, beyond Mangwe, to Bulawayo. Binding cracked but remains strong. Text and maps are clean, some age toning to margins. Military account of the fighting between the British South Africa Company and the native population during the Second Matabela War (aka The Matabela Rebellion). Colonel R.S. Baden-Powell, later founder of the world wide Scouting movement, also participated in putting down the rebellion. Note: This is the extremely scarce original printing. Plumer, Major in the York and Lancaster Regiment, commanded the Matabeleland Relief Force. "The news that was flashed down from Bulawayo at the latter partof March, 1896, that the Matabelehad. risen in revolt against the authority of the British South Africa Company, and had expressed their determination to exterminate all the white settlers in the country, caused the utmost consternation, not only throughout South Africa, but in England; and, indeed, it was hardly possible to exaggerate the gravity of the situation. The picture of the small population in that country, among whom were many women and children, exposed to the fanatical fury of a savage race, famed for their ferocities and cruelties.was horrible to contemplate. ".There were probably many causes for the rising. In the first place, though Bulawayo had been taken and Lobungula the. king driven from the country in 1893, the Matabelehad not really been conquered; many of the tribes had never fought at all, and though surprised into submission by the white man's sudden occupation of their capital and the flight of their chief, they still believed themselves cpaable of holding their own if opportunity should arise. The injudicious manner in which the authorities exacted the tribute of cattle fixed as a war indemnity, making as they did periodcal demands for a certain number of head from each district, was a perpetual source of irritation among the Matabele, and led to the belief that the real intention of the company was to gradually deprive them of all the capital and power which the possession of cattle meant.".

The present collection offers a window into the literary world of American poet and humorist Ogden Nash (19021971). It is comprised of 239 volumes published between 1886 and 1971, among which are numerous presentation and association copies. All books in the present collection come from the shared personal library of Ogden and Frances Nash. The collection spans poetry, humor, light verse, and literary criticism, and includes a significant number of first and limited editions, often in original bindings or dust jackets. Of particular note are six books inscribed by Nash to his wife, Frances (including five authored by Nash, one of which is in an "Author's Copy" half-leather binding). Included in the collection are 59 works by Nash, three of which feature edits to the text in Nash's hand. Twenty-seven of these Nash publications are Author's copies bound in half-leather. There are an additional 48 volumes bearing inscriptions to Nash from other authors and poets, most notably twelve volumes inscribed by S.J. Perelman. Among the 132 uninscribed volumes included here, 45 bear Ogden Nash's ownership inscription (10 bear the ownership inscription of Frances Nash). The number and range of authorial inscriptions represented in the present collections reflect Nash's wide-ranging literary friendships and professional associations. Notable among these are twelve warmly inscribed titles by humorist S.J. Perelman, whose acerbic wit is on display in a series of affectionate, playful, and sometimes satirical inscriptions to both Nash and his wife, Frances. These volumes also reflect Perelman and Nash's shared experiences in Hollywood and the literary scene of mid-century America. Other highlights include inscriptions from John Betjeman, Christopher Morley, E.C. Bentley, A.P. Herbert, David McCord, William Plumer Fowler, and Holger Lundbergh, among otherseach evidencing Nash's influence and the esteem in which he was held across literary and cultural circles in the U.S. and the U.K. O.

Ajouter au panierRare first and sole edition, effectively the official report for British involvement on the "Forgotten Front", reprinting Plumer's letter to the Earl of Derby, Secretary of State for War, dated 9 March 1918, summarising the contribution of the British Expeditionary Force (Italy); no copies recorded among institutional libraries, perhaps not surprising considering its fragile nature. Plumer had commanded 2nd Army on the Western Front and following the startling success of his famous set-piece battles of 1917 was given command of the British contingent of the Italian Expeditionary Force, the intention being to shore up that front following the disastrous Italian defeat at Caporetto in October-November 1917. Plumer was popular in Italy and on his departure "the Italian Government was sorry to see him go" (Wilks, The British Army in Italy 1917-1918, 1988, p. 67). In some ways this also constitutes Plumer's handover report before being recalled to the Western Front. It is cited in the biography Plumer of Messines (1935) by Plumer's friend and subordinate Tim Harington, who writes, "A certain amount of letters have appeared in the Press from time to time detracting from the services of the Italian troops and representing that the retreat from Caporetto was only stopped by the French and British troops almost at the point of the bayonet. That is totally untrue and I am fortunate in having in my possession a copy of a report rendered by General Sir Herbert Plumer in March, 1918, just before handing over to Lord Cavan on our return to Flanders". Provenance: neat stamp to front cover, "Ufficio stampa propaganda dei Corpo d'Armata di Napoli" (Propaganda Press Office of the Army Corps of Naples). Octavo, pp. 10. Original reddish-brown printed wrappers, wire-stitched as issued. Top corner of front cover cleanly torn with old tape repair on verso, covers variably faded, otherwise in remarkably good condition.
