Hard Back. Etat : Very Good. Etat de la jaquette : Very Good. First Edition Stated. 347 Pages Indexed. Attractive colorful endpaper maps. Dust jacket price clipped and has some minor edge wear. On November 16 1776 a ship flying the red-and-white-striped flag of the Continental Congress entered the port of St. Eustatius in the West Indies. Adhering to custom on entering a foreign port, the ship fired a salute, and the guns of the island's fort returned a ritual response. This act of recognition acknowledged that the vessel and its flag represented a legitimate nation. It was the first official salute to the United States of America, and although it took only minutes to carry out, it would have the most profound repercussions through the events of the next five years. In this masterful study Barbara Tuchman shows the ways in which not only America and England were affected by the Revolution, but Holland and France, and, by extension, the entire Old World as well. She appraises the political, emotional, and geographical imperatives at work for each of the warring forces during the long, ragged years of conflict. She analyzes the rivalries that determined Europe's crucial role in the American struggle, the centuries-long animosity between England and France, Holland's defiance of England's ban on aid to the Colonials, and demonstrates how, in coming to the aid of the Americans, England's enemies made the triumph of American independence possible. Chapter titles such as The French Intervention, Low Point of the Revolution, The Critical Moment, and Last Chance-The Yorktown Campaign. She recasts America's tumultuous nascent years and broading our understanding of the essential circumstances and events surrounding what was not only the birth of our own nation but the beginning, as well, of the modern Western world. Sixteen pages of illustrations, 8in full color, and 6 maps. Hess, Richard - Jacket Illustration (illustrateur).…

Paperback. Etat : Very Good. Though his work is often categorized as Pop Art for its use of popular iconography and household objects, Jasper Johns can also be described as a Neo-Dadaist. Using wax-based paint, plaster relief, collage, and even commonplace objects such as brooms and rulers in his paintings, Johns achieves a sculptural texture in his work. He is arguably most known for his flag paintings of the 1950s (the Museum of Modern Art in New York recently paid over $20 million for White Flag), though other themes, including targets, numbers, letters, and maps, are also famously recurrent. Johns is widely considered one of the most important American artists of the 20th century. Available in over 20 languages, "TASCHEN's Basic Art" series offers budget-minded readers quality books on the greatest artists of all time. The neat, slick format and nice price tag make "Basic Art" books perfect for collecting. Every book in the "Basic Art" series features: a detailed chronological summary of the artist's life and work, covering the cultural and historical importance of the artist; approximately 100 color illustrations with explanatory captions; and, a concise biography. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.…

Paperback. Etat : Very Good. Italian artist Lucio Fontana tore apart the modern art establishment - literally. Trained initially as a sculptor, Fontana (1899-1968) blurred the lines between painting and sculpture by creating works that combined both form and color in a spatial context, most famously exemplified by his slashed canvases of the 1950s and 60s. Fontana's work was truly conceptual, in that the ideas he wanted to express were more important than the actual work itself. With titles like "Concetto Spaziale" (Spatial Concept) and "Scultura Spaziale" (Spatial Sculpture), his pieces served as visual explanations of his ideas. From his early work in collaborating with architects through his years in Buenos Aires (where, in the mid-1940s, he published the famous "White Manifesto" and "Technical Manifesto of Spatialism," among others), his experimental light installations of the early 1950s, and his later experiments with various media, this book covers the entire career of Italy's pioneering abstract artist. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.…
