Paperback. Etat : New. Print on Demand. This book examines the reigns of François I, a great patron of arts and letters, and his successors, who contended with the influence of the Protestant Reformation. The author traces the emergence of humanism and Reformist ideas in France and explores both François I and his contemporaries' complex, and often contradictory, attitudes towards these movements. The Catholic Church, the Sorbonne, and the Parlement de Paris are also shown to play significant and at times antagonistic roles in shaping official and public responses to the Reformation. Engaging with sixteenth-century France's leading intellectual figures, this book uncovers the complex religious, political, and intellectual contexts shaping François I's France. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.…

This book unveils the life and teachings of Claude Aubery, a prominent philosopher and theologian who played a pivotal role in the development of the Lausanne Academy in the 16th century. Against the backdrop of the Reformation and the intellectual climate of the time, the book explores the complex religious and academic landscape in which Aubery emerged as a significant figure. It delves into the theological controversies that surrounded the notion of justification, highlighting Aubery's unique perspective that sought to reconcile aspects of Catholic and Protestant thought. The author traces the trajectory of Aubery's career, from his early studies in Geneva to his appointment as professor at the Lausanne Academy. The book deftly intertwines discussions of Aubery's ideas with historical context, providing a vivid depiction of his interactions with renowned scholars like Thà odore de Bà ze, Antoine de Chandieu, and Peter Ramus.
