Ajouter au panierdj. First Edition. Holk, Agnete. The Straggler, 1954, brought Holk's Danish lesbian novel Et Vildskud to English-language readers thirteen years after its original publication in 1941. The novel follows Vita Storm from her early attachment to Hilda through relationships with other women, including her experiences within Berlin's lesbian culture, before returning to Hilda and establishing a domestic life with her. Unlike many twentieth-century novels that concluded lesbian narratives through punishment, separation, or death, Holk allows Vita and Hilda to form a lasting relationship and family. The novel's English publication also records contemporary attitudes toward homosexuality: the dust-jacket copy describes homosexual people as "abnormal fellow humans" while acknowledging the growing public discussion of homosexuality in the British press. Holk, Agnete. The Straggler. London: Arco Publications Limited, 1954. First English edition, translated from the Danish by Anthony Hinton. 272 pages. Original hardcover in publisher's illustrated dust jacket. 8vo, measuring 6 x 8¾ inches. The Guy Nicholls dust-jacket illustration depicts two women against a vivid red background. The flap explicitly connects publication to contemporary debate: "Since the translation of this Danish novel was first commissioned over a year ago, the problem of homosexuality has acquired considerable prominence in the Press." The narrative traces Vita's relationships with Hilda, Irene, and Natascha, including her encounter with Berlin lesbian nightlife, before Vita and Hilda reunite following Hilda's failed marriage. The book was subsequently issued in the United States as Strange Friends in 1955. Marion Zimmer Bradley and Barbara Grier included The Straggler in their early bibliography of lesbian and homosexual fiction, and Grier later assigned it A*** in Lesbians in Literature, denoting substantial lesbian content. The novel's 1954 translation placed a Danish lesbian narrative first published during the Second World War before a new English-language readership, preserving both Holk's comparatively affirmative conclusion and the pathologizing vocabulary used to market homosexuality in postwar Britain. Dust jacket with loss at the upper left corner and minor chipping along the upper and outer edges; overall very good condition.…
