Soft cover. Etat : Very Good. No Dust Jacket. First Edition. Edgar Watson Howe (1853 - 1937) was an American novelist and newspaper and magazine editor in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. He fought for the Union in the Civil War and established a newspaper Bethany, Missouri to advocate his cause. Following successful, but short lived, endeavors operating newspapers in Colorado and Nebraska, Howe established "The Globe" in Atchison, Kansas in 1877 (Now the "Atchison Daily Globe"). He is perhaps best known, however, for "E. W. Howe's Monthly" (1911 - 1913), a periodical in which he was the sole writer (though freely and frequently quoting the writings of others), and one in which he would pontificate his political view and thoughts on the news of the day. An excellent source of additional information can be found in "A Critical Review of E. W. Howe's Monthly" a master's thesis by Della Josephine Heckert of Kansas State College, Pittsburg, Kansas (1961). Extant copies of the Monthly are scarce, and only a handful are found in libraries using WorldCat. General light use/age. Overall a tight and fairly clean copy.…

Oblong cabinet card with mounted photograph of tough-looking school children and their teacher standing in front of their one room school house somewhere in New England with photographer information to verso (11x17cm). Card corners rubbed with top left corner missing; photograph scratched and soiled but still clear. Photograph number penciled in on verso. Very Good overall. Brothers Alvah and George Howes were traveling photographers based in Ashfield, Massachusetts who would take their equipment by wagon from April to November across Massachusetts, Connecticut, and sometimes making it all the way up to Vermont to take photographs in situ. Most of the people they photographed were working class and wouldn't have ever had an opportunity to have their photo taken otherwise, like these rough and tumble school kids, many of whom are barefoot though one lucky boy has a bicycle.…
