A notably wide margined example of this much sought after edition, preserved in an elegant signed full morocco binding. First published by Musäus between 1782 and 1787, this collection stands alongside that of the Brothers Grimm as one of the most influential and enduring repositories of German folk narrative. For the present deluxe edition, Ludwig Richter, working with a circle of fellow artists, supplied an extensive illustrative programme. Twelve of his finest designs were transferred to large-format lithographs, enhancing the visual richness of the text and distinguishing this edition from earlier printings. An earlier edition of 1842 appeared in a considerably smaller format and without the twelve tinted lithographic plates, making the present edition a significant expansion both artistically and bibliographically. In addition to the lithographs, the work is further illustrated with numerous wood engravings by R. Jordan, G. Osterwald, Ludwig Richter, and A. Schrödter, contributing to its status as one of the high points of nineteenth-century German book illustration. An old bookbinder's stamp on the rear free endpaper identifies the Dresden binder Louis Robert Zimmermann, active from 1877 and master binder by 1881, later established in Moritzstrasse. His finely executed binding, dating from around 1890, underscores the esteem in which the volume was held by a contemporary owner. Quarto (25.7 x 16.5 cm). Text in German. Dark green fine-grained morocco, decoratively gilt, with leather inlays, gilt spine lettering, and richly gilt turn-ins; floral endpapers.
