This copy neatly inscribed by the illustrator to the title page: "To Sheila & Susan! / Axel Scheffler / London 26.10.09" with an original ink doodle of a cat waving beneath. A wonderful illustrated edition of Eliot's classic collection of cat poems, published by Faber in line with the 70th anniversary of the book's original publication in 1939, and the 80th anniversary of the founding of Faber and Faber. The enigmatic drawings by Scheffler, perhaps best known for his rendition of Donaldson's Gruffalo, include cats conducting choirs of mice, travelling on barges, dancing on rooftops and getting up to much more mischief besides. A wonderful copy of this popular children's story by Donaldson, inspired by 'The Highwayman' by Alfred Noyes, which tells the tale of a greedy rodent who steals the wares of all the animals he encounters along his way, until a brave duck gets the better of him. Donaldson's nineteenth collaboration with Scheffler, it followed on not only from the tremendous success of 'The Gruffalo' (1999) and 'The Gruffalo's Child' (2003), but also other bestselling works which included 'Room on the Broom' (2002), 'The Snail and the Whale' (2003) and 'Stick Man' (2008). Arguably the UK's most popular Children's author, Julia Donaldson is the author of over 180 published works, many of which are for use in school settings. With a background in theatre, television and radio, Donaldson taught in primary schools and composed songs until 1991 when, at the age of 43, she was approached by Methuen to adapt her song 'A Squash and a Squeeze' into a picture book for children. Two years later, the work was published, and was the first of her many collaborations with the German-born illustrator Axel Scheffler. In 1999, they collaborated once again on 'The Gruffalo', a work which was to shoot both the author and illustrator to international acclaim. Inspired by the Chinese folk tale 'The Fox that Borrows the Terror of a Tiger', the plot follows a clever mouse as he persuades the fearsome monster that he is the most revered and scariest creature in the entire forest. Donaldson later wrote that she went over several iterations of the central character with Scheffler before deciding on his final appearance. 'I told this story in quite a few schools before sending it to Axel', she claimed, 'and some of the children drew me pictures of how they thought a Gruffalo would look. This large illustration was drawn in front of an audience at the Barnes Children's Festival in 2016. It was later sold at a charity sale to raise funds for the Barnes Children's Festival Free Primary Schools Programme. Original artwork by Axel Scheffler is not common. The Gruffalo was first published in 1999. It has been adapted into an animated film, several plays, a theme park ride, and inspired a range of merchandise. A sequel was published in 2004. The present piece shows the gruffalo, a mouse (taking "a stroll through the deep dark wood") and a butterfly. Original drawing (640 x 550 mm) on flip chart paper (750 x 585 mm).
