Large 4to., publisher's blue boards with a drawing in line by Axel Scheffler imprinted in gilt to the upper cover; lettered in gilt to spine with publisher's device to foot; decorative cat endpapers; contained in the original unclipped pictorial dustwrapper (£14.99 to front flap); pp. [viii], 64; containing numerous illustrations throughout in full colour by Scheffler; aside from a couple of tiny dinks essentially a fine copy in the like dustwrapper. First edition thus, with full number line 1-10. This copy neatly inscribed by the illustrator to the title page: "To Sheila & Susan! / Axel Scheffler / London 26.10.09" with an original ink doodle of a cat waving beneath. A wonderful illustrated edition of Eliot's classic collection of cat poems, published by Faber in line with the 70th anniversary of the book's original publication in 1939, and the 80th anniversary of the founding of Faber and Faber. The enigmatic drawings by Scheffler, perhaps best known for his rendition of Donaldson's Gruffalo, include cats conducting choirs of mice, travelling on barges, dancing on rooftops and getting up to much more mischief besides. Perhaps most famously, the collection contains Eliot's humorous poem Macavity: The Mystery Cat, concerning a thieving ginger cat who constantly evades capture by the police: Macavity's a Mystery Cat: he's called the Hidden Paw - For he's the master criminal who can defy the Law.He's the bafflement of Scotland Yard, the Flying Squad's despair: For when they reach the scene of crime - Macavity's not there! A lovely inscribed copy. [Axel SCHEFFLER, Illus.] (illustrateur). inscribed by illustrator.…

Large 4to., illustrated laminate boards in full colour and gilt; together in the matching unclipped dustwrapper (£10.99 to front flap) with 'By the creators of The Gruffalo' circular sticker to the upper panel; decorative green cat endpapers; pp. [xxxii]; very minimal bump to head of spine, else fine; the wrapper very near fine, aside from light creasing mostly affecting the spine tips, and a short 2cm closed tear to the foot; the book is now housed in a custom-made navy blue slipcase.First edition, with full number line 1-9 as called for. This copy additionally signed by both Donaldson and Scheffler to the title page, the latter providing a doodle of a cat with a speech bubble and musical notation beneath his name. Donaldson's seventeenth collaborative work with Axel Scheffler, who here provides his now instantly-recognizable illustrations to this wonderful children's story. Here, the story follows the 'tail' of a busker's cat, who is separated from his owner after an unfortunate accident. Despite trying to forge a new life for himself as a domesticated moggy, and even having a family of his own, he eventually sets out to try and find his Fred. Can Tabby reconcile his old life with the new? Speaking of her inspirations for the story, Donaldson later claimed in an interview that "I've always been a cat lover… And as I've been a busker myself, I thought Tabby could be a busker's cat." "In a way, Tabby McTat is my most complex picture book, because instead of it simply being about someone who has an aspiration, or somebody who faces difficulties but gets what they want in the end, it's about being torn", she continued, "To begin with, Tabby just wants to get back to Fred the busker, who he's been separated from. Then he falls in love and has a family, but he still thinks about Fred and is torn between the two - until that gets resolved". Another charming children's story from this now award-winning and much revered duo. Axel SCHEFFLER [Illus.] (illustrateur). signed by author.…

Large 4to., illustrated laminate boards featuring the Highway Rat astride a horse, and a number of other animal characters; together in the repeat wrapper (unclipped, £10.99 to front flap) with circular gold sticker 'By the creators of the Gruffalo' to the upper panel ; decorative purple endpapers ; copiously illustrated throughout with illustrations in full colour, all by Scheffler; The BOOK a Fine copy, The WRAPPER similarly Fine. This copy double signed by both the author and illustrator in black ink to the title page, and dated in the year of publication, '1. 10. 2011'. The illustrator has additionally provided a doodle of the highway rat, in his hat, to the lower right hand corner. A wonderful copy of this popular children's story by Donaldson, inspired by 'The Highwayman' by Alfred Noyes, which tells the tale of a greedy rodent who steals the wares of all the animals he encounters along his way, until a brave duck gets the better of him. Donaldson's nineteenth collaboration with Scheffler, it followed on not only from the tremendous success of 'The Gruffalo' (1999) and 'The Gruffalo's Child' (2003), but also other bestselling works which included 'Room on the Broom' (2002), 'The Snail and the Whale' (2003) and 'Stick Man' (2008). On Christmas Day 2017, the BBC adaptation was released, starring David Tennant in the title role. Donaldson later wrote that the work was a "particular favourite of mine. Although the Rat is such a rotter, I can't help having a soft spot for him." Increasingly scarce with these attributes, particularly so in such fine condition. More images available on request. The First UK printing published by Macmillan, London in 2007 of this 'Gift Edition'. 8vo., publisher's dark green cloth with inlaid central image of the Gruffalo to the upper board, ruled in gilt; decorated with forest borders in gilt to upper cover; lettered gilt to spine, and with mouse motif gilt to lower cover; illustrated endpapers, and illustrated copiously throughout in full colour; housed together in the highly decorative publisher's slipcase, priced to the lower edge, with rectangular sticker for "Gruffalo activities, games and fun!" as issued ; The BOOK is in Fine condition ; THE SLIPCASE very near Fine, with just the tiniest rubbing to the spine tips, ever-so-slight lifting of paper to the upper edge. Donaldson's most popular and enduring work, with full number line 1-9. Signed by the author and illustrator in black ink to the title page, along with the location and date ('London, 13. 4. 2011') by Scheffler to the lower edge, and a charming doodle of a mouse. 'The Gruffal'o won the 1999 Gold Award Smarties Prize. This copy also comes together with a Smarties Book Prize Bookmark loosely inserted. Arguably the UK's most popular Children's author, Julia Donaldson is the author of over 180 published works, many of which are for use in school settings. With a background in theatre, television and radio, Donaldson taught in primary schools and composed songs until 1991 when, at the age of 43, she was approached by Methuen to adapt her song 'A Squash and a Squeeze' into a picture book for children. Two years later, the work was published, and was the first of her many collaborations with the German-born illustrator Axel Scheffler. In 1999, they collaborated once again on 'The Gruffalo', a work which was to shoot both the author and illustrator to international acclaim. Inspired by the Chinese folk tale 'The Fox that Borrows the Terror of a Tiger', the plot follows a clever mouse as he persuades the fearsome monster that he is the most revered and scariest creature in the entire forest. Donaldson later wrote that she went over several iterations of the central character with Scheffler before deciding on his final appearance. 'I told this story in quite a few schools before sending it to Axel', she claimed, 'and some of the children drew me pictures of how they thought a Gruffalo would look. Sometimes he looked a bit like a robot or a creature from outer space! But as soon as I saw Axel's version I knew that's what he was supposed to look like - a kind of woodland creature that is both scary and comical.' The book has since sold over 13 million copies, translated into over 100 different languages, and has been adapted into audiobooks, plays, and perhaps most famously, a BBC film, which first aired on Christmas day 2009 starring Robbie Coltrane as the Gruffalo, James Corden as the mouse, Helena Bonham Carter as the squirrel, John Hurt as the Owl, Tom Wilkinson as the Fox and Rob Brydon as the Snake. 'Who is this creature with terrible claws and terrible teeth in his terrible jaws? He has knobbly knees and turned-out toes and a poisonous wart at the end of his nose. His eyes are orange, his tongue is black. He has prickles all over his back.' This edition, appearing eight years after the first, constitutes a rather deluxe publication, with beautifully-decorated cloth boards and slipcase. Scarce, particularly so signed and doodled thus. It was later sold at a charity sale to raise funds for the Barnes Children's Festival Free Primary Schools Programme. Original artwork by Axel Scheffler is not common. The Gruffalo was first published in 1999. It has been adapted into an animated film, several plays, a theme park ride, and inspired a range of merchandise. A sequel was published in 2004. The present piece shows the gruffalo, a mouse (taking "a stroll through the deep dark wood") and a butterfly. Original drawing (640 x 550 mm) on flip chart paper (750 x 585 mm).
