Hardcover. Etat : Very Good. No Jacket. 2nd Edition. Colonel Carter of Cartersville by F. Hopkinson Smith 1891 Humorous Dialect Novel of Virginia. 1891 Second Edition, Published by Houghton Mifflin. Illustrated by the Author and E. W. Kemble. Deaccessioned from the long-Defunct from the American Merchant Marine Library Association. X-LIB. F. Hopkinson Smith was a man of multiple talents. One of those talents was the penning of genial novels and travel books. Being an artist of no mean talent, he often illustrated his own books, which is the case with this novel, "Colonel Carter of Cartersville", which was illustrated by Smith, himself, and the well-known illustrator, E. W. Kemble. "Colonel Carter of Cartersville" is a novel in dialect - southern dialect, including that of the various black characters that inhabit the story. It is a genial story, and was considered to reflect a certain truth about Southern life and culture. the book was very popular in its day. Among F. Hopkinson Smith's other talents was that of a highly esteemed engineer. The most famous government construction contract for Smith was the foundation for the Statue of Liberty in New York Harbor. Beautiful letter to one of the curators of the 1895 Exposition de Bordeaux, probably the painter and art critic Charles-Olivier Merson, who had included two of Berne-Bellcour's paintings, asking him to use his influence before the commission in order to enable the purchase of one of his paintings for the Musée des Beaux-Arts de Bordeaux: "J'ai eu, sur votre demande, le plaisir d'envoyer deux petits tableaux à l'Exposition de Bordeaux. J'ai habité pendant bien des années cette ville que j'aime beaucoup, et je serais très flatté aujourd'hui d'être représenté à son Musée par une de mes uvres. Je vous serais donc particulièrement reconnaissant, cher Monsieur, si par votre influence auprès de la commission vous pourriez faire réaliser mon désir. De mon côté, pour vous y aider, je suis prêt très-volontiers à faire un sacrifice pécuniaire le plus grand possible". - Well preserved.…
