Paperback. Etat : New. In the Shelter of Each Other is a wonderful collection of childhood reminiscences of Liverpool from the 1930s and 40s. In 1932 England was out of work. The mills were silent and the river ships were rusting at anchor. The king was ageing and his successor remained unmarried. In Germany Adolf Hitler was coming to power and had begun claiming lost territories. Everything was uncertain and shadows of war appeared on the horizon. Where would it all end? This was probably the wrong time and place to arrive in the world, but Jack Maddox appeared all the same. His childhood was spent in a dockside pub in the roughest, toughest part of the great city and he was introduced at an early age to the school of hard knocks. Brought together by their joint poverty, the people who inhabited this area shared what little they had and a strong community spirit was in evidence. Few had much, but nobody died alone. Jack Maddox was born in Liverpool in 1932 and was brought up in an area of poverty. The memories of his dockside upbringing are brought together in this, his first book. …

Taschenbuch. Etat : Neu. Neuware - Bones of Influence: Yale's Secret Society and the Shadow War for American Power Unlock the doors of 64 High Street and step into the shadowy world of Skull and Bones-Yale's most infamous secret society, where ambition, secrecy, and loyalty have shaped the destinies of America's elite for nearly two centuries. From its founding in 1832 by William Huntington Russell and Alphonso Taft, Skull and Bones has been more than just a college club. It's a pipeline to power, producing generations of leaders who have quietly influenced American politics, finance, media, and-most chillingly-intelligence. Names like Taft, Harriman, Bush, and Luce echo through the halls of history, their rise fueled by a culture of mutual advancement and silence. In Bones of Influence, you'll discover: - The real story behind the Tomb at 64 High Street-a fortress of secrets at the heart of Yale's campus.- How Skull and Bones rituals forged lifelong bonds that bypassed traditional channels and opened doors at the highest levels of government.- The society's pivotal role in staffing the Office of Strategic Services (OSS) and later the CIA, as documented in declassified files and corroborated by leading historians.- The subtle manipulations, missing records, and redacted documents that have kept the full extent of their influence hidden from public view.- The moral cost of silence: how loyalty to the Order sometimes trumped loyalty to country, with consequences that still echo in today's debates over secrecy and democracy.Drawing on well-documented facts, newly uncovered sources, and gripping investigative storytelling, this book peels back the layers of myth to reveal how Skull and Bones shaped U.S. intelligence-and what remains hidden in the archives. You'll meet the men who built America's postwar world from behind closed doors, see how their secret handshakes became a currency of trust at the highest levels, and confront the unanswered questions that haunt our national history. Perfect for readers of political history, true crime, and anyone fascinated by the intersection of power and secrecy, Bones of Influence is a riveting journey into the heart of America's most enduring-and enigmatic-elite network. Are you ready to find out what really happened behind the door at 64 High Street.…
